Job Description Summary

The successful applicant will participate in all aspects of being an academic surgeon. These include; 1) didactic and laboratory instruction of veterinary students enrolled in the professional degree ( DVM ) program, 2) mentoring of house officers and graduate students at the College of Veterinary Medicine, 3) participation in independent or collaborative research or other scholarly activities, 4) the provision of general and referral-level surgical services through clinical service in the Wilford & Kate Bailey-Small Animal Veterinary Teaching Hospital (Bailey- SATH ) at Auburn University, and 5) participation in hospital, departmental and college committee assignments as well as continuing education and other outreach activities.

Primary service assignment will be to the general /soft surgery service. Opportunities may exist to supervise rotations in other areas of surgery (orthopedics or oncologic surgery). The successful candidate will share coverage for emergency surgical needs within the hospital.

Specific faculty expectations and the percentage of time devoted to various job components will be determined by the needs of the surgical program and in consultation with the department head and hospital director.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimally qualified applicants must hold a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (or equivalent degree) and be credentialed as a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons ( ACVS ) or a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons ( ECVS ) at the time the appointment begins. Successful candidates must be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills in both small group and large, lecture hall, settings. Candidates applying at the rank of assistant professor would be minimally qualified if they have completed a surgical residency training program by the time of employment and will be eligible to sit surgical certification boards ( ACVS or ECVS ).

The candidate selected for this position must be able to meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment.

Desired Qualifications

Desired qualifications for the position includes an advanced degree (MS or PhD), previous research and publication experience and / or experience in teaching in a professional curriculum. Other desired qualifications would be a demonstrated area of interest in soft tissue surgery. The ability to interact with a wide variety of faculty and students in a professional and collegial manner is important.
