Chief Objective of Position

Reporting to the Office of Residence Life, a Hall Director at Christopher Newport University is responsible for the day-to-day management and administration of one of the University’s residential communities. As a full-time live-in staff member, the Hall Director seeks to provide a safe and secure living and learning community that complements the educational mission of the University and contributes to individual and interpersonal growth and development. Residence Life is a part of Student Affairs and the Division of Student Services.

The Hall Director is a 12 month, live-in position and responsibilities include counseling, conflict resolution, program planning, fostering community, creating an academic connection, leadership development, crisis intervention, facilities management, and assisting with the administration of the University conduct process. The major management activities are accomplished through the supervision of a student staff that may include up tp 16 Resident Assistants (RAs) and up to 35 Front Desk Assistants (FDAs). The Hall Director selects, trains, supervises, and evaluates this staff.

Work Tasks

ADMINISTRATIVE
o Works with members of the Residence Life staff to design, facilitate and evaluate staff meetings, workshops, and August, January and in-service training sessions.
o Attends and participates in weekly Residence Life meetings and Student Affairs Divisional meetings as scheduled. Meets regularly with supervisor.
o Trains and schedules staff to cover front desk operations 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
o Reviews weekly updates to the residential curriculum tracker; plans and conducts weekly staff meetings.
o Assists with the implementation of staff and environmental surveys.
o Maintains proper records and submits semester reports as instructed.
o Serves as part of an emergency response team with on-call responsibilities; carries a cell phone, on a rotating basis.

PERSONNEL
o Participates in the recruitment, selection, training, evaluation, and dismissal, if necessary, of student staff.
o Holds one-on-one supervisor meetings with RAs on a regular basis.
o Contributes to the professional and personal development of Residence Life staff.
o Completes formal written evaluations of student staff.
o Serves as a role model to the staff and students.
o Assists with recruiting, interviewing and selecting professional staff as needed.
o Works closely with other members of Residence Life, Student Affairs and the Division of Student Services including participation in office, division and university-wide committees as appointed.

ADVISING / DEVELOPMENT OF RESIDENTS
o Assumes an active and visible role in the on-going developmental process of individual residents to support their maximum academic success.
o Aids residents in obtaining assistance from other student services through referrals.
o Provides counseling and crisis intervention when needed.
o Informs and educates residents about State, University and Residence Life policies and regulations.
o Encourages residents to take responsibility for themselves and for their community.
o Serves as a judicial officer and holds student accountable for their behavior through the University conduct process.
o Mediates roommate conflicts that escalate beyond the RA level.
o Provides direction to student staff in on-going community and academic development efforts.

RESIDENTIAL CURRICULUM
o Develops programs and activities consistent with the philosophy of residence hall living.
o Motivates staff to plan and implement programs that meet student needs and interests based on the residential curriculum.
o Presents programs for staff and campus residents on topics of expertise/interest.
o Administers residence hall programming funds.

BUILDING OPERATIONS
o Works closely with Housing Administration to manage vacancies and conduct room changes.
o Opens and closes the area at the start and end of each semester and for breaks as appropriate.
o Manages the distribution and control of keys in the area.
o Oversees the system of inspection and the assessment of damages of all student rooms in the area prior to and following occupancy of the residence hall.
o Maintains public area inventories and makes weekly inspections of the residence hall.
o Monitors cleanliness of the buildings and works closely with Residential Housing Support to address standards, concerns and problems.
o Reports problems, damages and major maintenance needs and; maintains appropriate follow-up.
o Recommends physical improvements for the residence hall.
o Monitors building security, compliance with appropriate safety regulations and implements training for emergencies.
o Coordinates Health and Safety inspections.

OTHER DUTIES
o Performs other duties as assigned. Examples include: committee work, review/revision of office publications and forms, assisting with room selection, summer assignments, reports, advising organizations, etc.
o Develops a customer service approach to more effectively promote the “students first” initiative ensuring that all constituents are served in a fast, friendly, efficient and effective manner.
o Develops and maintains very positive and professional customer service and/or relations within the office/department and with all constituencies to include students, faculty, staff, guests, and employees.
o Demonstrates a positive and professional attitude and treats everyone with dignity and respect.
o Fully supports CNU Traditions and the “Students First” value at CNU and routinely goes the extra mile in providing service.
o This position is designated as a “responsible employee” who has the authority to redress sexual violence, who has the duty to report incidents of sexual violence or other student misconduct, or who a student could reasonably believe has this authority or duty.
o Reviews and communicates safety issues and goals to ensure a safe and healthy workplace and a reduction in work related absences.
o Promptly addresses any violation of safety rules.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's) required

Knowledge of student development theories. Ability to create and implement new initiatives. Strong administrative, interpersonal, and written communication skills. Computer skills including e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation applications. Conflict mediation skills.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's) preferred

Knowledge of residential curriculum or intentional interaction models. Ability to create or improve systems and processes. Demonstrated skills in crisis management, response and reduction practices.

Required Education

Master’s degree in a related field or a combination of Bachelor’s degree and work experience at a level which equates to an advanced degree.

Preferred Education

Master’s degree in higher education administration, student personnel, counseling, non-profit or public administration, or related field.

Experience Required

Experience working with students.

Experience Preferred

Experience working with college students in a student services area. Experience in a live-in university setting. Supervisory and staff training experience. Leadership training and crisis response experience. Experience working with learning communities or a sophomore experience.
