The Ethnic Studies Department in the College of Liberal Arts at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, invites candidates to apply for a full-time, academic year, tenure-track position at the assistant professor level in the field of African American Studies, to begin September 9, 2021.

The Department of Ethnic Studies offers both a major and minor designed to centralize the interdisciplinary study of race, ethnicity, and racism in the United States. The curriculum is intended to prioritize historically marginalized groups in the United States such as Native Americans/American Indians, African Americans, Latinx Americans, and Asian Americans.

The College of Liberal Arts is committed to enhancing the diversity and inclusion efforts of the campus community and the diversity of the curriculum. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teach a lower division survey course in Ethnic Studies (Survey of African American Studies) in regular format (32 students/course) and/or large lecture format (120 students/course)
  • Teach/Develop upper division courses according to expertise and curricular need
  • Sustain an ongoing record of research with scholarly publications/creative works
  • Contribute to service duties at the department, college, university, and professional levels
  • Engage in the mentorship of Ethnic Studies students

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must have completed a Ph.D. in Ethnic Studies, African American Studies, or a related field at the time of appointment which starts September 9, 2021. The successful candidates will present an excellent teaching record, be able to teach survey courses, and sustain an active publication agenda.

Demonstrated experience and commitment to student-centered learning and teaching, as well as the ability to collaboratively work in multidisciplinary settings is required. Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral use of the English language is required.
