Job Description:
The Department of Mass Communication seeks a new colleague to teach courses in public relations and other areas related to persuasive communication. Responsibilities include teaching courses in the program's curriculum at the introductory and upper-levels, developing one or more courses in the candidate's area of specialization, maintaining a robust research agenda, advising undergraduate and graduate students, and engaging in service on department or university committees.
  • A typical faculty workload responsibility may include up to twenty four (24) credits of instruction per academic year.
  • The successful candidate may need to teach in other areas as assigned and qualified.
  • May be expected to develop and deliver face-to-face, hybrid, and on-line instruction at the Mankato campus, online, and/or at the university's additional locations, as assigned.
  • The successful candidate will collaborate with colleagues in curriculum design, instruction and evaluation, conduct research productively and mentor students in research, help create innovative strategies for student recruitment, retention, and completion, and may be expected to develop external grant funding opportunities.
  • All faculty members are expected to engage in scholarly or creative activity or research, in continuing preparation and study, incontributing to student growth and development, and in providing service to the university and community (See Article 22 and Appendix G of the IFO Master Agreement)
  • This position will advise undergraduate majors.
  • The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching undergraduate courses in Public Relations (including but not limited to MASS233 Public Relations Principles, MASS353 Creative Advertising Principles, MASS434W Public Relations Writing, and MASS450 Strategic Communication Case Studies) and graduate courses in Public Relations (including but not limited to MASS633 Public Relations Management).
  • Professional media experience.


Required Qualifications:
  • ABD or terminal degree in Mass Communication, Speech Communication, Communication Studies, Strategic Communication, Public Relations, or closely related field. (If ABD, degree must be conferred on an official transcript and received in Human Resources by August 23, 2021.)
  • Professional experience in public relations, advertising, or related strategic communication position.
  • Teaching experience in higher education.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment.
  • Demonstrated effective written, oral communication and/or presentation skills.
  • Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in Mass Communication, Speech Communication, Communication Studies, Strategic Communication, Public Relations, or closely related field.
  • Three years’ minimum experience in the profession of public relations, advertising, or related strategic communication field.
  • Three years’ minimum teaching experience in higher education.
  • Demonstrated preparation to teach, advise, and support a wide variety of students.
  • Record of successful contributions to student growth and development, including successful advising of student organizations.
  • Experience with advising and mentoring students.
  • Experience working with international programs and students, as well as diverse populations.
  • Record of successful workplace collaboration or other departmental, college, or university service.
  • Creative or scholarly interests that will advance the mission and goals of the Mass Communication department at Minnesota State University, Mankato.
  • Experience and willingness to work with interdisciplinary programming.
