Assistant/Associate Professor Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment

The Coastal Carolina University Spadoni College invites applications for the full-time tenure-track position in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment (CIA), beginning August 2021. This position is a nine-month appointment, with the potential of summer teaching.

Coastal Carolina University is a public comprehensive liberal arts institution located in Conway, South Carolina, just nine miles from the Atlantic coastal resort city of Myrtle Beach. The Spadoni College is a CAEP accredited institution. More than 1,200 undergraduate and graduate students are currently majoring in education programs at Coastal Carolina University. The Spadoni College offers undergraduate programs in early childhood education, elementary education, middle level education, physical education, and special education. Graduate programs include the Master of Arts in Teaching – Secondary Education degree with concentrations in English, social studies, mathematics, and science; Master of Education and Educational Specialists degrees in Educational Leadership; Master of Education and Educational Specialists degrees in Instructional Technology, Master of Education in Special Education, Master of Education in Language, Literacy, and Culture, and an Interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Education.

The Doctorate of Philosophy in Education (Ph.D.) degree offers three (3) specialization areas in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment (CIA), Higher Education Administration, and Educational Leadership. The Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment specialization area is designed to provide advanced professional studies and graduate-level coursework for candidates who are interested in continuous improvement in the area of curriculum development and theory, advanced instructional strategies, designing instruction and assessment to meet the individual needs of diverse learners, using data to drive decision-making pertaining to instruction and the many facets of student achievement and teacher’s impact on student learning. The Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment specialization area is designed to provide advanced professional studies and graduate-level coursework for candidates who are interested in continuous improvement within their existing teaching position or to become leaders within a P-12 school or at the school districts level. In addition to teaching courses in the CIA Ph.D. specialization and relevant cognate areas, the successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with the program coordinator and other program faculty to: actively participate in established and new program curriculum and assessment development, implementation, and analysis; provide advisement and mentorship to students; participate in program, departmental, college, and university governance; represent the program with external constituencies; provide assistance with the recruitment and retention of students; and engage in relevant professional activities and scholarship.

Required Qualifications:

• Earned Ph.D./Ed.D. degree in Curriculum and Instruction, or a closely related discipline with a strong content background in curriculum, instruction, and assessment. ABD candidates may be considered, dependent upon the projected date that the terminal degree will be conferred;
• A minimum of three (3) years teaching experience at the K-12 level;
• Evidence of or potential for successful scholarship, research, teaching, mentoring, advising, and practice that provides access, equity, education quality and learning of historically marginalized and underrepresented P-12 students, university level students, educators, and leaders;
• Evidence or the potential for successful research and scholarly productivity, including external grant funding for research;
• Demonstrates excellence in interpersonal, written and verbal communication, and analytic skills;
• Knowledge of current standards-based instructional methodology;
• Experience and/or scholarship in the philosophical and theoretical underpinnings of quantitative, qualitative, and/or mixed methods research;
• Experience or evidence of potential to support candidates through the Dissertation process, by serving as a committee member and/or committee chair on graduate student dissertation committees;
• Demonstrates potential to collaboratively work with multiple stakeholders, such as area P-12 school districts, to build meaningful partnerships within a diverse environment; and
• Ability to teach in person, online or in hybrid formats.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience teaching courses in curriculum, instruction, and assessment, at the undergraduate and/or graduate level;
• Evidence of or potential for leading and conducting instruction and/or research through a culturally responsive lens related to or within diverse settings;
• Expertise in multiple statistical software programs (e.g., R, SAS, STATA, SPSS);
• Expertise in qualitative software programs (e.g., Dedoose, NVivo)
• Experience or evidence of potential to serve as a methodologist on graduate student dissertation committees; and/or
• Experience with online instruction (synchronous and asynchronous methodologies).
