The Division of Student Affairs at UW Tacoma empowers students to envision their most rewarding future and supports them to engage the resources of UW Tacoma and the South Sound to make their vision a reality. The Division champions holistic learning and success for students and works to remove barriers for students, engage them as partners to create an inclusive campus community and equips them for lives and careers that have meaning and impact.

The Assistant Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Services (AVCES) provides management and operational assistance to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (VCSA) and implements a campus-wide Strategic Enrollment and Retention Management Plan.  The AVCES works closely with the VCSA to provide leadership and direction to the recruiting, admissions, registration, financial aid, and veteran services teams in-line with strategic planning and enrollment goals. The AVCES will also work closely with the tri-campus community, a number of community organizations, local school districts and campus pre-college and new student programming units to ensure a seamless admissions process.  The individual will have full responsibility for recruitment, admission, and enrollment cycles with emphasis on yield and growth. The individual will ensure offices operate in a manner consistent with the University’s overall enrollment management plan and divisional standards.

  • Serves as a member of the division’s Executive Leadership Team;
  • Works closely with the VCSA regarding short and long-term planning as it affects the division in general and as it concerns core enrollment functions specifically;
  • Represents the VC’s goals and interests regarding the management of core enrollment functions;
  • Provides leadership to a team of up to 35 staff associated with enrollment services units; oversees hiring, evaluation/performance assessment, and provides training and development opportunities; projects future staffing and operational needs;
  • In partnership with the VCSA, develops and implements an annual budget for the enrollment services units and their activities;
  • Interacts with colleagues across the university system, including counterparts in the Seattle and Bothell campuses, as well as academic deans and directors to ensure institutional alignment and synergy with enrollment/admissions policies and strategic plans;
  • Collaborates with the university’s office of marketing and creative services to promote the university and attract new students.

    Enrollment Management
    The AVCES:
  • Develops, implements and assesses the university’s strategic enrollment and retention management plan, focusing on the recruitment of new students and initiatives to help retain current students; performs an annual review of this plan and recommends revisions as needed.
  • Directs a team composed of representatives from academic and administrative units that coordinate design and development of a campus-wide recruitment and retention strategy, that includes a focus on persistence and graduation rates;
  • Develops strategies for recruiting new students, including first year, transfers, military, and returning adults using data analytics and newly improved recruiting and admissions technology; serves as liaison/resource for graduate and international admissions;
  • Ensures recruitment goals, policies, practices and actions produce successful student recruitment results; continually establishes, monitors, evaluates and modifies processes, procedures, and/or standards ensuring alignment with access, equity and the university’s mission, values, goals and objectives; meets local, state and federal laws and regulations; maintains specific knowledge of current and historic issues that impact equity and access an imbeds solutions to such obstacles into all admissions policies;
  • Maintains a continuous pipeline of quality applicants engaging not only prospective students, but also key constituents, such as the university tri-campus community, partnering school districts, alumni, local community colleges, and parents; maintains data as it relates to student attrition and analyzes such data to inform recruitment, persistence and retention;
  • Recommends, develops and implements policies and procedures that foster and promote student success and ensures a student-centered environment at all stages of the admissions and registration process;
  • Develops admissions and operational strategies by evaluating and foreseeing trends, establishing critical assessments that ensure elevated productivity, quality and customer-service standards;
  • Conducts research and review of freshman and transfer applications for admissions; ensures sound and equitable admissions decisions based on applicant’s credentials and admissions criteria.

  • Master’s degree in Education or a related field and minimum of five years of senior administrative leadership experience in enrollment management;
  • A proven track record of setting and reaching enrollment goals in a higher education environment;
  • Successful experience in the development and implementation of strategic enrollment plans;
  • Strong leadership, management, technology, and budgeting skills, and successful experience in using qualitative and quantitative data to drive planning and decision making;
  • Knowledge of best practices and current trends in all aspects of enrollment management—recruitment, admission, financial aid and student success;
  • The ability to lead, develop, motivate and assess personnel; a collegial, collaborative and transparent leadership style; the ability to be a “hands on” team leader and team player;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written;
  • Cultural competency demonstrated by experience in and commitment to working with diverse populations;
  • Understanding of shared governance and proven ability to work well with faculty;

  • Skilled as a visionary and innovative leader with a sense of urgency;
  • Five or more years managing 4 or more managers or directors (leader of leader experience);
  • Experience in a growing and/or urban-serving public university, especially one that is part of a state system
