Job Description

The Thomas E. Cook Counseling Center invites applications for a mental health clinician to serve as an Embedded Counselor in the Pamplin College of Business. Located in the College, the embedded counselor will serve a dual role of providing direct clinical and educational services to students while also providing consultation and training opportunities for the faculty, advisors and staff of the college. The position will report to the Director of the counseling center and will also coordinate with the Pamplin Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs in the College to learn and to participate in the community culture.

The embedded counselor will provide direct clinical services to undergraduate and graduate students of the college including initial consultation and assessment, individual counseling, and appropriate referrals for psychiatric consultations and group therapy. The embedded counselor will be available for drop-in hours, programmatic offerings for students, and informal consultations.

Within the college, the embedded counselor will provide consultation with faculty, advisors, and staff regarding student mental health concerns. Additional activities may include participation in orientation for new students, faculty, and staff; educational programming in suicide prevention; attendance at department and college meetings; and other collaborations to be determined.

The Cook Counseling Center is a vibrant and growing multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals who work and thrive in a fast-paced environment providing focused treatment to all full-time students of Virginia Tech. Embodying the Virginia Tech Principles of Community (www.inclusive.vt.edu) and committed to inclusivity and social justice, the center provides support to over 5,000 student per year through a full range of mental health services including individual and group counselling, psychiatric evaluation and medication, outreach and educational trainings (www.ucc.vt.edu). The center has a central location with satellite operations and embedded counselors on the Blacksburg campus, in our Roanoke facility, and in the coming year on the Northern Virginia Innovation campus. The center is accredited by the International Accreditation of Counseling Services and its internship training program by the American Psychological Association; additionally, the center provides training opportunities to third-year psychiatric residents and practicum students in counseling.

Required Qualifications

Applicants will be licensed or license-eligible in their field of mental health and must hold the appropriate degree for licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Psychologists must possess a doctoral degree in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from an APA-approved program with an APA-approved internship (ABD’s will be considered). In related fields, a Master’s degree in counseling, marriage and family therapy, or social work plus two years of experience are required.
• Experience in providing focused therapeutic interventions with a multidisciplinary team.
• Experience and interest in collaboration with academic departments, faculty and staff.
• Training and experience in delivering culturally competent interventions.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in working with undergraduate and graduate students.
• Familiarity with educational demands of a college of business.
• Ability to speak a foreign language, e.g., Spanish, Mandarin.
• Experience in outreach and educational programming, e.g., suicide prevention gate-keeper programs.
