Position Summary:

The Wisconsin Institute for Discovery (WID) and the Department of Plant Pathology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison are searching for a tenure-track Assistant Professor dedicated to using computational and statistical sciences to understand biological systems. The position is collaborative between WID and the Department of Plant Pathology, with the latter serving as tenure home. The position is an academic, 9-month appointment.

Principal Duties:

This assistant professor will conduct research on the development of statistical models to answer biological questions. Focus areas could include, but are not limited to: inference of phylogenetic networks to study reticulate evolution; comparative methods to study the evolution of traits on hybrids; new sampling schemes to improve on Bayesian phylogenetic inference; and the application of such tools to datasets in plant and/or microbial sciences. Collaboration with WID scientists and biologists, as well as members of the Department of Plant Pathology, is expected.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a vigorous extramurally-funded research program while mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. The incumbent will also be expected to develop and teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. Initial teaching duties may include a new course in the candidates area of expertise and/or a new course on statistical and computational tools for biology students.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Ph.D. in statistics with strong mathematics and applied mathematics background.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Candidates with a strong foundation in statistics, biostatistics, or related data science fields with application of statistics to address biological questions, specifically in the area of phylogenomics, are sought for this position. Fluency in programming, high throughput computing, and statistical and mathematical software are desired.

Effective oral and written communication skills and a positive attitude for teamwork and collaboration, particularly across biomedical and plant sciences, are also required.

Evidence of outstanding research quality and productivity; three years of relevant postdoc experience preferred; evidence of writing competitive proposals for federal funding with ten publications in peer reviewed journals and conferences preferred.

Professional experience in teaching and a strong record of mentoring students in research are required for this position, with experience teaching statistics strongly preferred. Strong preference will also be given to a candidate with a national reputation as indicated by invited presentations at national meetings and editorial responsibilities for leading journals.
