Academic advisor will monitor academic progress for subset of students among the Whitman undergraduate population. Provide academic advising which includes program planning, choice of major(s), course selection, academic rules and regulations, study abroad options, and academic opportunities to enhance the undergraduate experience and ensure timely degree completion. Work as a team member with the Whitman undergraduate advising staff to ensure that all Whitman students receive accurate information and guidance in their degree requirements. Provide support and make necessary referrals for students in need.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree with 2-3 years of work experience in an academic setting. Masters degree preferred.

Job Specific Qualifications

Strong interpersonal, written and oral communications skills.

Must be collegial, detail-oriented, tech-savvy, and have excellent program planning and project management skills.

Responsibilities

Counsel, advise, and mentor Whitman undergraduate students on complex academic and personal issues, making appropriate referrals when needed. Counsel and advise students in specific curriculum decisions including the choice and scheduling of courses, selection and change of majors and minors, providing referrals to specific departments, schools or colleges as appropriate.

Understand, interpret, and provide rationale for SU and Whitman academic policies and procedures to students, parents, faculty, and staff.

Oversee all administrative tasks associated with assigned students including semester degree checks, rising senior audits, degree certifications, athletic certifications, flag maintenance, and daily intake of student forms.

Utilize campus-wide software to track degree completion and communicate with faculty regarding student success.

Promote and engage in extracurricular involvement on campus for the IMPRESS program. IMPRESS is a program to develop and measure extracurricular student experiences, increase student engagement, and better prepare undergraduate students for real-life experiences outside of the classroom.
