Postdoctoral Associate in Ecohydrologic and Biophysical Modeling

Position Summary

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral scholar to join an interdisciplinary research team investigating ecohydrologic and ecophysiological controls over plant responses to biophysical stress. The primary focus of the position will be to investigate how heat and drought affect agricultural crops, which is funded by NSF PGRP . Opportunities also exist to collaborate on research on stand to ecosystem scale responses of plants to drought. The successful candidate will improve upon existing biophysical process-based models by developing new ecophysiological or ecohydrological model components, implementing models in high-performance computing environments, and/or developing new methods to integrate process-based models with genotypic and phenotypic data. The selected candidate will be focused primarily on modeling, and they will have opportunities to work collaboratively on glasshouse and field-based experiments conducted by researchers at University of Wyoming, Purdue University, UC Davis, USDA ARS in Fort Collins, and University of Arizona. Candidates must be comfortable with quantitative data analysis, have experience with or a willingness to learn process-based modeling, and be trained in a biology or geoscience field.

The job duties and responsibilities of this position will be:
• Develop and improve existing biophysical process-based models of whole-plant hydraulics, physiology, and ecohydrology, informed by a variety of data collected at plant, field, and ecosystem scales
• Assist with the design and implementation of data collection and data synthesis protocols
• Work independently and collaboratively
• Publish in peer-refereed journals
Required knowledge skills and abilities:
• Ph.D. in ecohydrology, plant sciences, computational sciences, geography, or a related field, completed within the past 5 years
• Experience in the assessment of plant traits relevant to crop yield
• Knowledge of programming (e.g., C++, R, Python) and quantitative data analysis
• Ability to work independently and in an interdisciplinary research team
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to publish in peer-refereed journals

Position will remain open until filled.

The position is affiliated with the Geography Department and Center for Computing Research at UB, a large R1 university. UB has cutting edge computational resources including an 8,000 CPU, 170 Tflop computer cluster and high-end visualization laboratory. Buffalo (population 250k) is on the shores of Lake Erie about 30 minutes from Niagara Falls and two hours from Toronto.
