Overview
The Department of Foreign
Languages and Literatures (http://foreign.ecu.edu) is one of
sixteen departments in the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and
Sciences at East Carolina University. It is a diverse,
research-active, and collegial unit that offers a Bachelor of Arts
in Foreign Languages and Literatures with seven concentration
areas: French, French Education, German, German Education, Hispanic
Studies, Hispanic Studies Education, and Global Studies; minors in
French, German, and Hispanic Studies; a Master of Arts in Hispanic
Studies, an advanced language and culture option in the Master of
Arts in International Studies, and a Hispanic Studies teaching area
in the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT). The Department offers
Greek, Latin, Russian, and Japanese in support of Thomas Harriot
College of Arts and Sciences interdisciplinary minors in Classical
Studies, Russian Studies, and Asian Studies, and concentrations in
the Bachelor of Arts in multidisciplinary studies in Classics,
Classical Civilization, Russian Studies, and Asian Studies.
Job Duties
The Department
of Foreign Languages and Literatures invites applications for a
full-time, non-tenure-track, fixed-term faculty position at the
rank of Teaching Instructor or Teaching Assistant Professor
(depending upon qualifications) beginning Fall 2021. The faculty
member will be responsible for teaching all levels of Spanish with
a teaching load of four courses per semester.
Minimum
Education/Experience
MA in Spanish
is required, or MA with 18 graduate credit hours in the teaching
field for an appointment as Teaching Instructor. For an appointment
as Teaching Assistant Professor, PhD in the teaching field is
required. Qualifying degrees must be received from appropriately
accredited institutions. Native or near-native fluency in Spanish
and English is required.
Preferred Experience, Skills,
Training/Education
The ideal
candidates will have experience teaching all levels of Spanish,
particularly at the lower-levels, using communicative teaching
practices; the ability to teach at higher levels is a plus. We
welcome applicants who have an interest in teaching undergraduate
courses in the Arts and Sciences in both English and Spanish
related to the Spanish- speaking world (including the USA) as well
as Global Studies.
A commitment to teaching and willingness to do university service such as curriculum development, recruitment, and outreach.
Candidates will have the ability to teach online and/or hybrid courses; and/or experience incorporating innovative approaches in teaching language classes.
