General Summary/Purpose

The Financial Clearance Coordinator will be responsible for all administrative and financial components of financial clearance, including pre-registration, insurance verification, pre-certification, and patient financial information. This position is also responsible for informing the patient/guarantor of all financial liabilities and documenting pertinent information into appropriate systems.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Obtains benefit eligibility information, referral authorization, pre-certification, and other approvals required for financial clearance.

  • Communicates with patients, insurance companies, department administrators, physicians, and other departmental staff to ensure the ideal patient experience.
  • Offers assistance to patients.
  • Maintains accurate information on each patient to facilitate the patient encounter.
  • Uses automated systems to expedite patient scheduling, pre-registration and check-in.
  • Works with payor contracts and handles requirements for financial clearance.
  • Facilitates cross-functional activities.
  • Works with others in a team environment.
  • Conducts follow-up activities to obtain any missing clinical information.
  • Performs miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications(Required)

High School Diploma/GED.

  • One (1) year work experience in customer service required.
  • Two (2) years related work experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical insurance coverage preferred.
  • Medical terminology and basic computer skills preferred.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Excellent communication skills.

  • Problem solving skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize work.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of medical insurance plans, especially managed care plans.
  • Ability to understand, interpret, evaluate, and resolve basic customer service issues.
  • Intermediate in Microsoft Office.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
