The Department of Anesthesiology & Critical Care Medicine is seeking aPhysician Assistant (PA) Resident,Critical Care. This residency is geared towards advanced training and practice of PAs in the management of acute and critically ill patients in various ICUs and services across Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.

Core rotations include: Medical, surgical, neuro-critical, cardiac, cardiac surgical, burn ICUs; Emergency Department; and Infectious Diseases and Renal services. When on rotations, Physician Assistant Residents will be working within a team to provide comprehensive care including assessment, diagnosis, management, selection of interventions, required procedures.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

Physician Assistant Residents will be working within a team on various intensive care settings to provide comprehensive and consistent care for critically ill patients during a 1-year training program.

The Physician Assistant Resident will:

  • Obtain history and perform a physical examination to determine patient health status.
  • Formulate a working diagnosis, develop, and implement treatment plans.
  • Identify patient health conditions and prescribe treatment based on diagnosis.
  • Perform bedside procedures including placement of central venous catheters, placement of arterial lines, placement of dialysis catheters, insertion, and removal of foley catheters, peripheral IVs, and intubations
  • Schedule and perform laboratory and diagnostic procedures.
  • Participate in daily morning rounds.
  • Write daily progress notes; Maintain patient and procedure logs.
  • Attend required education as described in the physician assistant critical care PA residency handbook.
  • Uphold ACGME guidelines on duty hours as expected of physician residents and advanced practice providers in each specialty.
  • Participate in evaluations and testing throughout the program, including SIM center labs .

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree; Certification by the NCCPA or similar national certifying body; Completion of an ARC-PA certified Physician Assistant program. Must be licensed as a PA in State of Maryland. Experience may be considered in lieu of bachelor's degree, as permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH/BMC credentialing process is required prior to start date.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Possess interpersonal skills necessary to interview, teach and counsel patients.
  • Possess a comprehensive understanding of clinical and/or surgical procedures, patient care procedures, medical protocols and testing procedures. Knowledge of medical terminology, Anatomy, Physiology, Chemistry, Psychology, Pharmacology, Clinical Medicine, Radiology, Microbiology and Pathology.
  • Analytical ability necessary to evaluate and determine health status of patient and implement proper care plan.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interview, teach and counsel patients; instruct health care personnel on procedures and treatment.
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate patient history, physical examination findings and laboratory values.
  • Perform history and physical, make preliminary diagnosis for review by physician.

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
