Mission or Goal of Unit

The mission of the department is to lead the state and nation in physical activity and health sciences education and research by delivering rich and focused undergraduate and graduate curricula, engaging in significant scholarship which draws from the health and exercise sciences, life sciences, and social sciences, and promoting diversity and inclusiveness as we seek to enhance the quality of life of our surrounding, national and global communities.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

The chief purpose of this position is to support our mission in regards to undergraduate instruction and advising.

Position Responsibilities

1. Teaching – The faculty member hired for this position will teach undergraduate courses in exercise science, particularly in biomechanics, and advise undergraduates in the academic requirements and policies for students pursuing the health science concentration.

2. Research – Research responsibilities are not a requirement of this position.

3. Service – Meet service expectations of the department, school, university, community and profession

Required Qualifications

Earned Master’s Degree in Exercise Science, Biomechanics or related field; teaching experience in higher education; competence in teaching undergraduate courses in content areas such as biomechanics, resistance training for health and performance, exercise testing and prescription, and/or exercise programming and leadership. Faculty member must have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU .

Preferred Qualifications

Doctoral Degree in Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics or related field; record of teaching and service activities in higher education. American College of Sports Medicine Certification (Certified Exercise Physiologist or Clinical Exercise Physiologist) or National Strength and Conditioning Association Certification (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist). Experience advising undergraduate students and directing undergraduate student research. Prefer candidate with a successful record of teaching and working with diverse students including underrepresented minority students ( URM ), and other underserved populations.
