This is a temporary non-exempt, benefited position through September 30, 2021 (position may be renewed based upon available funding, availability of work and satisfactory performance)
Salary: $4,420.83 per month. A comprehensive benefit package is provided.
Schedule: 40 hours per week; hours will vary depending on need with typical hours being 8 am to 5 pm. Some weekends may be necessary. Incumbent must be able to participate in remote or on campus work depending on the directives from the CSUSB campus.
Summary of the Native American Grant:
The grant funds received from the San Manual Band of Mission Indians to implement a multi-year plan to increase Native American enrollment at Cal State San Bernardino (CSUSB). This work will further strengthen our community partnerships as well as provide guidance and support to our native students. In addition, this position will support CSUSB Strategic Plan Goal 1 - Student Success and Graduation Initiative 2025 with regards to increasing enrollment in our Native American community from our outreach efforts.
Summary of job duties:
Under the supervision of the Director of Outreach and Student Recruitment, the Native American Outreach Counselor will work independently to:
- Outreach and recruitment with the primary objective to increase the enrollment of Native-American students.
- Implementing the goals of the Office of Outreach and Special Programs and the university Native American Initiatives.
- Assist in executing programs and events that recruit and prepare Native American students for university enrollment.
- Providing student advisement and guidance.
- Assistance with the development and implementation of college preparation, access and enrollment programs and activities.
- Represent the university in various educational and community programs.
- Meet with tribal leaders, visit reservation communities, and engage with students in schools on and off reservations.
- Plan experiences at CSUSB's San Bernardino and Palm Desert campuses that encourage students to plan for postsecondary education with a specific emphasis on enrollment in programs at CSUSB.
- Meet with students to discuss admissions eligibility issues, provide pre-admission counseling to prospective students and customer service to students on a continuous basis in person, on the telephone.
- Conduct CSUSB presentations to students who visit the university; provide customer service via phone, email and in person to prospective students.
- Assist with other projects related to processing of applications and entering transcripts.
- Visit high schools and colleges to meet with students.
- Participate in on-campus high profile recruitment events.
- Review and analyze transcripts, test scores, GPA calculations, and unit counts to determine eligibility for admission to the University for transfer.
- Review first time freshman applications for all programs including impacted majors.
- Prepares monthly outreach reports detailing outreach efforts.
- Maintain records related to admissions, academic programs, general education and related university information.
- Maintain accurate information on CSUSB websites as it relates to Native American students.
- Review and analyze K-12 regional/statewide and school/district-based enrollment data to help identify target schools and assist with the implementation of innovative outreach and recruitment strategies and visitations.
- Determines the effectiveness of processes, programs, recruitment and services through comprehensive data-driven measurement and evaluation.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Applicants must possess a Bachelor's degree in one of the
behavioral sciences, psychology, educational counseling, or a

management/training, preparing workshops, coordinating student
services, and serving as a liaison to target schools.
- Strong organizational, management, leadership, interpersonal,
oral and written communication skills are required.
- Must demonstrate work experience with or the ability to
participate and facilitate activities listed in job duties and in
- Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and
- Applicants must possess the ability to handle confidential and
sensitive information, along with the ability to work cooperatively
with a diverse group of people, exercise sound judgment, determine
priorities, complete assigned projects in a timely manner and work
well under tight deadlines.
- Applicants must possess the following critical strengths
including, but not limited to: reliability, attention to detail,
and strong self-initiative.
- Must possess the ability to work with students and set a positive example.
- Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Social Service or other related field.
- Minimum of two years of higher education professional experience in college outreach and recruitment.
- Experience in Tribal Relations, Native American Student Success or Indigenous Student Affairs.
- Experience working with Native American communities in and around California.
- Strong preference will be given to candidates who have succeeded in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the project's target population.
- Community College professional experience.
- Experience with FAFSA and other financial resources such as grants, work study, loan forgiveness, and scholarships.
- A working knowledge PeopleSoft experience is preferred.
