Description
Note: College of Marin's faculty pools are open to applications on a continuous basis. Although there may not be any current openings, applications will remain on file until the hiring department has a need to add candidates to their pool OR for up to one year from the date of application, whichever occurs first. If your application becomes inactive after one year, you may re-apply to the pool at that time. Screenings and interviews can be conducted at any point in time as the hiring department necessitates. Once a screening has occurred, applicants will be notified of their status.

Reporting to the Dean of Arts & Humanities, librarians could work on both the Kentfield and Indian Valley (Novato) campuses as part of the regular assignment.

The librarian's primary responsibilities include:
  • Assisting and instructing students, faculty and staff in information literacy skills, using print and electronic resources at the reference desk
  • Prepare and conduct general, subject-specific, and/or class specific information literacy sessions or workshops related to use of the Library's online catalog, databases, and web resources
  • Participating in collection development to maintain and enhance the library collection
  • Other projects and duties as assigned

ONLINE INSTRUCTION
Although, during the COVID-19 pandemic, College of Marin is providing instruction almost exclusively remotely, once normal operations resume all faculty members must be available to provide instruction in the classroom and in person. Please note that the College does not offer online-only teaching assignments.

Essential Functions

Course-Integrated Information Literacy Instruction:
  • Maintain familiarity with the COM Library's print and online resources, including in-house resources as well as those available through consortia
  • Prepare and teach subject- and/or course-specific information literacy sessions emphasizing the Library's print and online resources as well as broader information literacy concepts
  • Prepare and teach general information literacy workshops emphasizing the Library's print and online resources as well as broader information literacy concepts
  • Collaborate with discipline faculty in developing/refining information literacy components within their content areas
  • Assess and utilize appropriate technologies for delivering instruction to on-campus, remote, and online students
  • Teach research and information literacy skills at the Reference Desk

Reference Instruction:
  • Provide research/reference assistance to students, faculty, and staff
  • Serve regularly scheduled reference hours, including days, evenings and weekends as needed

Collection Development:
  • Assist in the selection, acquisition, and de-selection of materials in order to maintain and enhance the COM Library Collection
  • Actively promote the use of Library resources and services by assisting discipline faculty in identifying, locating, acquiring, and/or utilizing library resources and services to support classroom instruction
  • Act as a liaison to discipline faculty in assigned departments/programs as needed

Other Duties:
  • Participate in evaluating student performance related to information literacy student learning outcomes (SLOs)
  • Contribute to development of Library programs, policies, and procedures
  • Participate in professional committees and activities
  • Maintain currency and knowledge in the assigned area of responsibility
  • Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics
  • Perform other duties as assigned


Requirements & Desirables

REQUIREMENTS
1.) A Master's degree in Library Science or Library and Information Science; or
2.) The equivalent; and
3.) Demonstrated sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and the campus community.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
A.) Demonstrated experience teaching information literacy skills;
B.) At least three years' professional library experience, preferably in a college or university library;
C.) Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with a variety of instructional methods for teaching college students information literacy skills.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (Desirable Attributes and Skills)
  • Ability to teach research skills, using a variety of print and online resources
  • Ability to establish effective and collaborative working relationships with students, faculty, and administration
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated successful reference/instruction experience in an urban community college, academic, or public library environment, serving patrons of diverse backgrounds and needs
  • Demonstrated ability to create online library materials using resources such as LibGuides, Wikis, web software, HTML, CGI, course management software and other web development tools
  • Demonstrated experience maintaining and updating library websites
  • Experience with learning management systems, such as Canvas.
  • Ability to assist students, faculty, and staff in the use of computer, audiovisual, and multimedia software, mobile devices and equipment for research purposes
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated effective experience with current and emerging digital library technologies and print resources required to meet the informational and educational needs of a very diverse clientele
  • Experience or training in planning and implementing outreach to distance learning programs
  • Demonstrated ability to use an integrated library system (such as Sierra) to extract bibliographies, produce statistics, or generate reports
  • Understanding of contemporary equity and diversity concepts and issues in a community college setting
  • Ability to respond creatively and innovatively in an environment of rapid change

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Prior to employment, the selected candidate will be required to complete the following:

  1. In accordance with Federal Law all employees must provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
  2. Criminal Justice/Fingerprint Clearance.
  3. California Education Code, Section 87408.6 requires persons employed by a community college in an academic or classified position to submit to a TB risk assessment developed by CDPH and CTCA and, if risk factors are present, an examination to determine that he or she is free of infectious TB; initially upon hire and every four years thereafter.
  4. Certificated candidates who have not previously been employed in an academic position in California will be required to provide a medical certificate from a licensed physician showing that the candidate is free from any communicable disease unfitting the candidate to instruct or associate with students. The medical exam shall have been conducted not more than six months before submission of the certificate and shall be at the expense of the candidate. (Ed. Code Section 87408)
  5. DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS: All Marin Community College District (MCCD) employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the MCCD requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency. Supplemental & Salary Information

BARGAINING UNIT & RETIREMENT PLAN
UPM - Part-time Faculty:

Librarians are considered Temporary Credit Unit (faculty) members and are represented by the United Professors of Marin (UPM/AFT 1610). Part-time faculty members are required to comply fully with the United Professors of Marin Collective Bargaining Agreement, including payment of union dues or charitable contributions. General information regarding rights and responsibilities under the Agreement can be found in the Collective Bargaining Agreements section of our Human Resources site. Part-time UPM employees are also members of the California State Teachers' Retirement System (CalSTRS).

SALARY INFORMATION
FLSA Status: Exempt

Salaries for Part-time Temporary Pool members are based on the number of units (hours) assigned and are paid at 95% of the Full-time Faculty Salary Schedule. New part-time librarians will be placed between Step I, Column I and Step 9, Column 5 of the salary schedule, depending on verified background and experience.

Temporary Part-time Librarian Payment Formula:
First, determine the number of units: Hours per semester ÷ 599 (round to 4 decimal places) x 15 units = # of Units. Then:

Annual salary (from salary schedule) x # of Units ÷ 30 units x 95% = semester payment; divide by five (5) = monthly salary.
