 Primary Position Function/Summary:

Manage the LEP programs which includes: program implementation and evaluation; supervision of event planning; execution of marketing and communications of the programs; coordinating and managing fund raising activities; and also oversee the work of the Project for Middle Class Renewal as well as external outreach relationships to the constituencies that LEP serves.  

 Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Market the Labor Education Program (LEP} and the Project for Middle Class Renewal (PMCR} (15%)

  • Develop relationships with union leaders to arrange and expand the education and research work of LEP.
  • Develop and maintain PMCR partnerships by arranging meetings with labor organizations, employers and nonprofit organizations.
  • Establish new relationships with labor, business and non-profit organizations that promote the work of LER and the PMCR
  • Work with the LEP Director to develop, design, sustain and grow LEP and PMCR programs and initiatives.
  • Utilize social media platforms (e.g., blogging, podcasting, Facebook, Twitter) and LEP website to publicize and distribute news of LEP and PMCR programs.
  • Conduct graphic design work on department materials.
  • Provide for the publication and distribution of PMCR research through multiple media platforms
  • Coordinate outreach efforts to labor organizations and other affiliated bodies to arrange educational programing.
  • Pursue ongoing financial support for PMCR through fundraising and grants.

Manage the research process for PMCR (20%)

  • Provide for the publication and distribution of PMCR research through multiple social media platforms
  • Coordinate the publication and distribution of PMCR research through the LEP website and multiple social media platforms.  Creates an annual report of PMCR research reports.
  • Help to build strategic partnerships with the Illinois labor movement that enhances LEP's stature within the labor community.
  • Create an annual published report of LEP activities.  Utilize social media platforms (e.g., blogging, podcasting, Facebook, Twitter) and LEP website to publicize and distribute news of LEP programs.
  • Arrange logistics for campus forums to discuss research reports.

Coordinate classes and conferences for LEP and PMCR (50%)

  • Complete all unit business transactions.
  • Preparing program forms.
  • Process contracts, revenue and expense reports, and invoices for programs.
  • Develop a year-long calendar of PMCR research projects and LEP conferences.
  • Prepare budgets, set pricing, monitor financial situation and make expenditure decisions for self-supporting unit.
  • Secure venues, and other instructional needs for participants and instructors.
  • Design and create program materials
  • Hire, supervise, and review work of graduate hourly workers and is responsible for training, payroll, and evaluation.
  • Prepare yearly metrics of programs.
  • Arrange bi-annual meetings of the Labor Education Advisory Board including communications, logistics and working with the LEP staff to set the agenda
  • Prepare reports for the Labor Education Advisory Board.
  • Attend planning meetings with Director.
  • Work with PMCR and LEP staff to process any vouchers related to their research activities.
  • Develop and maintain PMCR partnerships by arranging meetings with labor organizations, employers and nonprofit organizations.
  • Assist in coordinating fundraising activities and communication to PMCR donors.
  • Provide planning support and on-site programming assistance for LEP faculty and staff during union educational conferences.

  Business and Human Resource Responsibility: (15%)

  • Reviews LEP faculty and staff travel, enters in TEM and approves for payment.  This includes checking for accuracy, completeness, and conformance to University policy and guidelines.  Resolves issues with unit and/or vendor before processing payment.
  • Makes p-card and t-card purchases for LEP programs and faculty after reviewing details for adherence to University policies and appropriateness of the order.  Follow up on approved purchases as needed.
  • Develop and prepare the placement of appropriate advertising that meets university, state, and federal requirements for LEP position vacancies.  Ensures that relevant laws and regulations are applied.
  • Enter and maintain appointments in HRFE for LEP adjunct, academic professional, Civil Service, and hourly employee groups.   These appointments include new hires, account changes, payroll, and pay adjustments.
  • Serve as liaison with campus HR offices on HR processing issues. Responsibilities in this area require interpretation and communication of policy and procedure.
  • Work closely with new staff regarding new hire procedures, questions on benefits, and general employment questions.
  • Resolve appointment issues related to Campus and College HR policies (e.g., benefits, visas, SURS, Payroll, etc.).



Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.  One year of education, training and/or work experience with program/project management and or event planning. Demonstrated experience in graphic design.

Preferred:  Demonstrated fundraising experience.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Familiarity with the labor movement and knowledge of statewide labor leaders.
  • Comfort and experience with reaching out to union leaders, employer groups, non-profit organizations and public bodies.
  • Ability to work independently and to use initiative to propose programs and projects.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Competency in using all Microsoft Suite applications.
  • Ability to use social media platforms to create outreach marketing material and do graphic design on program materials.
  • Capable of building strong professional relationships with diverse groups and a genuine commitment to advancing middle-class economic opportunities for all workers.

 Salary and Appointment Information This is a full-time Civil Service Program Coordinator position appointed on a 12-month service basis.  The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close of the search. Salary is commensurate with experience.
