The Dance Department at Marymount Manhattan College (MMC) seeks applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor in Dance with specialization in African/Jazz/Diasporic Dance or World Dance forms to begin fall 2021. This person would also oversee the BFA Jazz concentration students and the Dance Minor. The position is a full-time, one-year appointment for 2021-22 with a 4/4 teaching load. This one-year position may convert to tenure-track depending on institutional need and resource availability.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • An MFA/PhD/MA in Dance or an earned bachelor’s degree and equivalent professional experience based on the College’s degree equivalency option. Copies of the degree equivalency policy will be made available to appropriate candidates during the application process.
  • Five or more years of professional performance experience, three-years or more of full-time or part-time teaching experience at the college level or equivalent.
  • A demonstrated history of professional creative accomplishment including but not limited to choreography, performance, and alternative creative endeavors.
  • Organizational, leadership and collaborative skills, and a commitment to pre-professional dance training within the context of a liberal arts education. 
  • Eligibility to work in the United States.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Teaching responsibilities (4/4 load) include African Diasporic Dance Techniques (including but not limited to African Dance, Afro-Caribbean Dance, African-American Vernacular Dance Forms, Jazz, Tap, Hip-Hop...), Asian, South Asian, and/or Southeast Asian Dance Techniques, and teach in our new Embodied Africanist Aesthetics course, develop new courses and teach within the new Dance, Community and Social Justice concentration in addition to choreographing for and advisement of the Jazz concentration students. Candidates also need to be able to teach courses in the Dance Minor as needed.  
  • The preferred candidate will bring demonstrated leadership and production experience to the department and be prepared to work collaboratively with other members of the Dance faculty to advance the department’s pledge to developing and implementing recruitment strategies, curriculum, pedagogy, and dance production practices that are anti-racist, anti-sexist, gender, and LGBTQIA+ inclusive.
  • Other responsibilities including acting as a liaison for all co-teachers and/or adjunct faculty in area of expertise, commitment to regular office hours for ongoing mentoring of students’ creative and professional development, college-wide service, participation in divisional and college meetings, and academic advisement.

 

Potential cross-departmental/cross-disciplinary collaborations 

This position would have the potential to teach the Africa to the Americas course currently offered in the general education curriculum as well as to develop cross disciplinary courses with other areas that speak to culture, race and ethnicity.
