General Summary/Purpose:

This position supports basic and translational research in the Mintz laboratory in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine (ACCM). Applicants should have experience working with in vitro studies and mouse models related to the neurosciences and/or pharmacology. The position involves not only laboratory based research, but also lab organization and direction as well as an expectation of being able to supervise laboratory staff at entry level.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

    Under the general supervision of a faculty investigator or laboratory supervisor, specialist will perform laboratory experiments following common or established protocols and procedures. This will involve cell culture, rodent model research, immunohistochemistry, microscopy, and other techniques. There is a requirement to maintain lab organization and to keep accurate, detailed laboratory records. Additional responsibilities will be to aid the principal investigator in the writing of progress reports, grants, and manuscripts; maintaining and update procedures; protocols and approvals for work with laboratory material. Prepare presentations and summaries of experiments. Independent troubleshooting of technical and experimental issues is required as is the professional and scientific judgment. Specialist is expected to assume responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results and to have a strong interest in the success of the research enterprise.

Minimum Qualifications:

    Bachelor’s degree in the life sciences,biology, chemistry or related field Two (2) years of laboratory experience performing relevant techniques. Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula***.

Preferred Qualifications:

    Experience in working in the experimental neurosciences. Master’s degree in the life sciences. 2-4 years of laboratory experience.

***JHU Equivalency Formula:18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
