Brief Summary of Work for this Position
Responsibilities include: researching, conceptualizing, writing and distributing press pitches, news stories and releases; informing local, regional and national media about university achievements, including faculty, staff and student achievements; coordinating news conferences and special events; managing emerging media issues with potential impact to the university; constructing and disseminating messages to campus and media during emergency incidents; and supporting the web-based crisis communication system for campus; collaborating with Office of University Relations ( OUR ) staff to plan promotional photography, video and multimedia projects; creating content for web platforms and contributing to social media platforms on an as-needed basis; may supervise student interns.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be
received from appropriately accredited institutions.
- Applicants will be considered only if qualifications include
specific and direct experience in a media relations/publicist role
at an agency, non-profit or for-profit institution
- Must be able to use a variety of technologies (web design,
social media, web content management)
- Must be able to work with faculty, staff and campus
administrators to develop media stories and communicate strategic
messages to media as well as to the campus and local
community
- Must be able to identify and cultivate interview subjects and
experts for media
- Must be able to proactively manage sensitive and confidential
issues with potential impact to the university and address related
media inquiries appropriately
- Must demonstrate significant knowledge of professional public
relations standards
- Must possess sense of discretion and professional
demeanor
- At least three years of progressive experience in media
relations, specifically, with an agency or large public or private
organization
Preferred education, professional skills and experience - Bachelor’s degree in communication, creative writing, English,
journalism, professional writing or a discipline related to the
area of assignment
- Experience supervising students and interns a plus
- Media training (of executive leadership) experience a
plus
