The College of the Arts at the University of Florida invites applicants and nominations for two tenure-track positions in AI and the Arts, at least one of which will fill the Arts and Global Equity focus area. These hires are a part of a major, long-term initiative at the university focused on artificial intelligence (in research, research infrastructure, and curriculum), with the goal of making UF a national leader in AI.

Creatives are the original human-centered innovators and experience makers. The College of the Arts’ making disciplines are unified by both critical thinking AND critical doing; we are specialists in the relationship between what is being made, its users or audiences, and how that relationship can catalyze more equitable and just world-building. With a focus on interdisciplinarity and collaboration, we seek two colleagues whose work bridges AI and the Arts and is grounded in creative or technical practice. The successful candidates will help answer some of the questions we are asking right now and discover the questions we should be exploring next:

  • How can the arts help AI function in the world in a different way?
    • How can a focus on process over product inform the future of AI?
    • How can the practice of critique inform AI or AI pedagogy?
    • How can improvisation, as a data set or theoretical frame, help shape AI’s possibilities in both capacity and applications?
    • How can the arts help destabilize technocultural power alignments, and help address and shape a more sustainable and inclusive human-AI interdependence?
  • What role should the arts play in AI across the curriculum at the University of Florida, and beyond?

Our two main areas of focus for these hires are Arts and Global Equity and AI Fundamentals for creative applications.

Within Arts and Global Equity, possible areas of candidate expertise include:

  • Anti-racism
  • Composition
  • Design
  • Embodiment
  • Improvisation
  • Liveness/live art
  • Making
  • Social practice
  • Time

Within AI Fundamentals for creative applications, possible areas of candidate expertise include:

  • Composition
  • Computational creativity
  • Creative development
  • Curatorial practice
  • Data visualization
  • Design
  • Emergent technologies
  • Improvisation
  • Machine learning
  • Making

These two new faculty will contribute to the University's overall AI curriculum and research profile, and they will be leaders for AI's inclusion in the College of the Arts' curricula and research portfolio.
