Founded in 1959 on the original site of the first Calexico High School, SDSU Imperial Valley (SDSU-IV) offers eleven bachelor’s and four master’s degrees, including a nationally-acclaimed teacher education program. With fewer than a thousand students, SDSU-IV provides a uniquely intimate educational experience. The Division of Professional Studies
The SDSU Imperial Valley Division of Professional Studies offers several programs stressing both academic and practical experiences that prepare students for successful and productive careers in a variety of professional fields including Criminal Justice, Homeland Security, Nursing, Public Administration, and Social Work. Many of these programs are taught in an international or global context and focus on emerging transborder issues of concern to our region. The Division offers both undergraduate and graduate programs of study including three (3) undergraduate degrees, and three (3) graduate degrees.
Position Description (Public Administration):
SDSU Imperial Valley Division of Professional Studies is seeking applicants for a tenure-track position in Public Administration at the assistant or associate professor level. The position is a joint appointment to the Imperial Valley campus and the School of Public Affairs on the San Diego campus. The primary appointment is to the undergraduate and graduate programs at the Imperial Valley campus in Calexico. We welcome applications from scholars with training in public administration, as well as in related disciplines, including but not limited to public policy, public management, emergency management, homeland security, political science, sociology, and organizational studies by the date of appointment.
The position requires teaching core public administration courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, through different modalities, including face-to-face, site-specific, and online. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the Division of Professional Studies faculty, teaching and contributing to our collaborative programs is desirable. The research area is open but preference will be given to candidates who are familiar with homeland security issues, as the Division will launch a new Homeland Security Master’s program in Fall 2021.
Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and be able to work with students of diverse cultural backgrounds. Candidates should possess a strong research agenda and capability as demonstrated by an appropriate history of professional growth activity. This will include publication in refereed journals, professional conference participation, grant activity, as well as other evidence of an active research program. Candidates will be expected to work effectively with agencies in the local community.
We are seeking applicants with demonstrated experience in and/or commitment to teaching and working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and members of underrepresented groups. Our definition of underrepresented populations (UP) is: African-American, Latino/Latina, Native American, Southeast Asian, Pacific Islander, groups of varying abilities, women in public administration. Candidates must satisfy two or more of the eight Building on Inclusive Excellence (BIE) criteria. Candidates that meet BIE criteria:
- are committed to engaging in service with underrepresented populations within the discipline
- have demonstrated knowledge of barriers for underrepresented students and faculty within the discipline
- have experience or have demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring underrepresented students
- have experience or have demonstrated commitment to integrating understanding of underrepresented populations and communities into research
- have experience in or have demonstrated commitment to extending knowledge of opportunities and challenges in achieving artistic/scholarly success to members of an underrepresented group
- have experience in or have demonstrated commitment to research that engages underrepresented communities
- have expertise or demonstrated commitment to developing expertise in cross-cultural communication and collaboration
- have research interests that contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education
Candidates must indicate in their cover letter how they meet at least two or more of these criteria.
Candidates should have an earned Ph.D. in public administration or a related field such as public policy, public management, emergency management, homeland security, political science, sociology, and organizational studies by the date of appointment (August 2021). Candidates should have demonstrated evidence of research publications, teaching excellence, and the willingness to participate in shared governance at the school and university level. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
