The University of Alberta (U of A) is seeking their next Vice-President (Research & Innovation). The Vice-President (Research & Innovation) will join the University of Alberta as it reimagines its academic and administrative structures to create a more efficient, innovative, and sustainable model of the modern post-secondary institution, and as it builds on its place as a leader in higher education and research, and its central role as a driver of economic growth, innovation, and creativity, in the province and beyond.  This is a period of tremendous opportunity and challenge for the University of Alberta, with no other Canadian university having attempted such a transformational change.

The Vice-President (Research & Innovation) will play a key role in leading and supporting this transformation and will be part of the team that will create a new model for post-secondary across the country, while positioning the U of A as a leader in entrepreneurial and innovative solutions in higher education.

With more than 40,000 students (20 percent at the graduate level), the U of A is one of Canada’s top five research intensive universities, with expertise in established and emerging areas including health and life sciences, engineering, social sciences, energy, business, computing science, agriculture, AI, education, and humanities. The University of Alberta is home to a Nobel Laureate, over 90 Canada Research Chairs, and 41 National 3M Teaching Fellows. The U of A’s expertise and strength attracts over $450 million annually from various research funders and partners, including federal and provincial government, industry, foundations, and other organizations.

This is an exciting time to be joining the University of Alberta. There is tremendous momentum and engagement across the campus, and the Vice-President (Research & Innovation) will play a pivotal role in capitalizing on that momentum and advancing the entire dynamic research enterprise. The Vice-President (Research & Innovation) is responsible for providing leadership to ensure the highest standards of scholarship across the campus, and for fostering collaborative and interdisciplinary research that has impact on the world stage. The Vice-President will build upon the University of Alberta’s impressive research accomplishments and will encourage further growth by strengthening the University’s success with commercialization and knowledge translation, and by further developing its relationships with funding councils, industry partners, affiliated hospitals, and governments.

As a key member of U of A’s executive team, the ideal candidate will have an outstanding record of scholarship, and a track record of mentoring and developing research excellence in faculty and students. A visionary and big thinker, with the ability to see the broad linkages and possibilities for interdisciplinary research, the new Vice-President will have exceptional interpersonal skills, be highly innovative, entrepreneurial, and strategic, and be ambitious in promoting the U of A’s standing as a leading research-intensive university engaged in high-quality scholarship of national and international significance.

The University of Alberta is committed to an equitable, diverse, and inclusive workforce. We welcome applications from all qualified persons. We encourage women; First Nations, Métis and Inuit persons; members of visible minority groups; persons with disabilities; persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity and expression; and all those who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas and the University to apply.

The University of Alberta will provide support in the recruitment processes to applicants with disabilities, including accommodation that takes into account an applicant’s accessibility needs. If you require accommodation in order to participate as a candidate in the recruitment process, please communicate your needs to the recruitment professionals named in the job description.

The University of Alberta acknowledges that it is located on Treaty 6 territory, and respects the histories, languages, and cultures of First Nations, Métis, Inuit, and all First Peoples of Canada.

Consideration of candidates will begin late February 2021, with the new Vice-President taking office July 2021, or as soon as possible afterwards. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority. Nominations and expressions of interest may be sent to Colleen Keenan and/or Krutika Hotwani at albertavpri@odgersberndtson.com
