The Physician Assistant Program at the Graduate School of the University of Maryland Baltimore is seeking qualified applicants for a 0.8-1.0 FTE Assistant Program Director and non-tenure faculty member to join a growing legacy program known for its innovation in physician assistant education .

The Assistant Program Director is responsible for assisting the Program Director in the overall planning, development, and implementation of the PA Program curriculum, and for assisting in the administration of the clinical education component, including identifying, recruiting and overseeing clinical education sites. Additionally, the Assistant Program Director is responsible for serving as an instructor in the program and for assisting to ensure that the program is in compliance with the Accreditation Review Committee on Education for Physician Assistant Education (ARC-PA). A minimum of three years’ experience in academia, with proven track record in academic and/or clinical coordinating within an accredited Physician Assistant program is required. A working knowledge of the ARC-PA Standards is a must.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise full-time and part-time (adjunct) instructional faculty assigned to the clinical and didactic phases of the PA program.
  • Evaluate, develop, and amend clinical, didactic, and laboratory curriculum in cooperation with the Program Director, Medical Director, Academic and Clinical Coordinators, curriculum committee and appropriate faculty to comply with changes in accreditation requirements, program structure and program philosophy.
  • Assist in the evaluation and selection of suitable resources for course work, adjunctive activities during clinical clerkships, and independent study in cooperation with institutional personnel.
  • Evaluate clinical and didactic faculty, performing classroom visitations as part of the evaluation process for full and part-time faculty, using standard, university approved evaluation instruments such as student opinion forms and faculty evaluation forms.
  • Maintain close contact with students and evaluate their general welfare and response to program instruction; serve as an academic advisor to PA students.
  • Liaison with the Medical Director and appropriate clinical agencies to evaluate relevance of curricular content and to communicate and evaluate clinical teaching objectives.
  • Recruit, review credentials, counsel and advise students concerning program requirements.
  • Assist the Program Director in the development of short and long-range planning objectives for the PA program.
  • Oversee program course offerings, maximum class size, number of overloads, length of classes, number of class selections per week.
  • Develop strategies for student recruitment and program promotion.
  • Assist in the preparation of ARC-PA and Middle States evaluations, reports, accreditation documents, and participate in periodic accreditation site visits.
  • With the Program Director and Medical Director, review and develop the clinical component of the program; manage contracting with clinical agencies, and maintain oversight of clinical agencies.
  • Review and make recommendations to revise the PA curriculum as necessary to comply with the ARC-PA Standards.
  • Assist the Program Director in university, federal, and state grant writing activities.
  • Serve on Graduate School and University committees commensurate with duties and abilities to promote the PA program on campus, within the clinical setting, and at the local, state and national levels.
  • Promote the UMB PA program in scholarly writing, research and in educational endeavors such as interprofessional experiences at the local, state and national levels.
  • Maintain clinical competency and qualifications by practicing clinically and/or participating in continuing medical education activities.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Program Director.


Qualifications :

Minimum education:

  • A doctoral degree in Medicine with eligibility for Maryland licensure and completion of an accredited medical residency program in one of the following: Internal Medicine, Family Practice, Emergency Medicine or Pediatrics.


OR

  • A masters-prepared Physician Assistant degree from a regionally-accredited institution with current NCCPA certification. Three years’ experience in discipline with expertise in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine or Pediatrics is preferred. Candidates with a doctorate are highly preferred.
  • Experience in healthcare and knowledge of behavioral and population health is preferred.
  • Three years teaching experience with a proven record of excellence in the field of Physician Assistant studies is required.
  • Demonstrated experience as an assistant/associate program director, an academic or clinical coordinator in a master’s level PA program required.
  • Experience in curriculum development and course design is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal abilities with excellent verbal and communication skills to effectively communicate with students, staff, faculty, preceptors, clinical site staff, and organizational administrators.
  • Willingness and ability to travel between campus sites and clinical locations as needed. A valid Maryland driver’s license is required.
