Position Summary:

The evolutionary genomics lab of John Pool is recruiting a full time or part time bioinformatics researcher. The Pool Lab uses genomic data and Drosophila fly experiments to gain insights into fundamental evolutionary processes. Research areas include the genetic architecture of adaptive trait evolution, the early stages of reproductive isolation, and the relationship between genetic diversity and evolvability. The lab currently includes the professor, one postdoctoral researcher, four PhD students, and four undergraduates.

The bioinformatics researcher will:
(1) Perform next generation sequencing data processing, assembly, and analysis for genomics research projects,
(2) Facilitate the use of lab-developed genomic data analysis methods by the broader research community, and
(3) Manage the lab's computational resources, and help lab members overcome computational challenges.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Bachelors degree in the biological sciences, computer science, or a related field.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Minimal requirements:
* Either a bachelors degree plus at least two years of bioinformatics work experience, or a masters or PhD degree involving relevant research and training for this bioinformatics position.
* A strong background in Linux command line usage and shell scripting, and computer programming including Python or Perl.
* A conceptual background in basic biology.

Desirable experience:
* Experience with Illumina sequence data processing, filtering, assembly, and analysis.
* Experience using high throughput computing networks.
* An intermediate or advanced conceptual background in genetics and evolution.

The candidate should be able to:
* Keep track of multiple tasks, and prioritize them to manage time effectively.
* Display strong organizational skills in managing a shared computer system.
* Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills.
* Work collaboratively and maintain positive professional relationships.

Candidates with greater than the minimum experience and qualifications are welcome to apply. The exact salary and level of the position will depend on the applicant hired.

Title prefix is dependent on relevant work experience.

This is a fixed-term terminal appointment with a guaranteed length of twelve months (expected term of employment is April 1, 2021 through March 31, 2022). This appointment may be extended up to a maximum of 24 months as a fixed-term terminal appointment or may become a renewable appointment depending on funding.
