Master’s Degree in Education, a subject area supported in the center ( STEM, Humanities, Social Sciences, etc.) or a related field. Five years of experience in academic support services or a related field. Experience in a state institution of higher education is desirable. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse student, staff, and faculty populations. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.

Preferred: Doctorate in education or related. Experience with College Reading and Learning Association Program Certification.

Nature & Purpose of Position

Responsible for direction, coordination, and oversight of the Academic Success Center tutoring and classroom support services. Helps strengthen a culture that supports a safe and respectful learning and working environment. Provides leadership, vision, management, and evaluation to tutoring and academic support programs and staff in virtual and physical environments.

Develop activities, policies, procedures, and departmental culture that facilitates, promotes, and sustains collaboration with campus departments to develop new or improve current academic support services.

Responsible for organizing, planning, and evaluating personnel, work assignments, supervision, training, and technical direction of professional and student staff. Evaluates professional development programs and academic support services to identify areas of strengths and necessary improvements.

Develops strategies and processes to optimize operations for the department. Ensures compliance with applicable state and federal laws, University policy, divisional directives, and professional organization standards.

Prepare and/or present accurate and timely reports as required for various memberships, partnerships, budgets, etc. Makes decisions about objectives, operating procedures, and policies in coordination with the Executive Director and the Director of First Year Experience/Student Success Initiatives.

Responsible for the department administration, including budget preparation and control. Serves on committees as requested.
The ASC Director performs complex and highly advanced leadership and managerial work providing direction and guidance in strategic operations and planning for tutoring and other academic support programs in the Academic Success Center ( ASC ). The Director supervises support staff and services in the ASC . The Director oversees training and development of staff, develops and improves academic support services, collects and analyzes data, promotes services and resources to departments and students.

The Director works in collaboration with departments to assist in facilitating a streamlined academic student support process, develops new support programs and improves current programs, coordinates budget in collaboration with the Executive Director, and promotes ASC services. The successful candidate will create innovative academic support strategies for student learning using technology to engage Bearkats in various modalities.

Additional duties will include developing and implementing assessments for tutoring in the ASC with strategic goals that result in action-based results, coordinating with First-Year Experience programs to embed academic support programming, and forming new partnerships on campus. This position reports to the Executive Director of the Academic Success Center and will begin Summer or Fall 2021.

Sam Houston State University is seeking a full-time Director of the Academic Success Center ( ASC ) to provide oversight for the daily operations of the center and ensure that Bearkats, faculty, staff, and visitors are always welcomed in a supportively engaging environment. The purpose of this position is to provide leadership and management focused on an inclusive and student-focused center. The Director will work in collaboration with departments to assist in facilitating a streamlined academic student support process, develop new support programs and improve current programs, coordinate budget in collaboration with the Executive Director, and promote ASC services. Ability to interpret, develop, adapt, and apply customer/student operational procedures. Assists in the development of policies and operational procedures for the overall department. Skilled in directing multiple tasks, setting priorities, and organizing operations.

Highly developed written/verbal communication, listening and persuasion skills required: to communicate the services offered, to align/design services in response to students changing needs, and to prioritize the execution of projects.

Sets direction aligning Academic Success Center goals with the institution, enabling success of others throughout the organization.

This position may be designated as a Campus Security Authority ( CSA ).
