The University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) seeks a dynamic academic leader who promotes student success, faculty excellence, and diversity and inclusion to serve as Dean of Arts & Sciences. Four departments comprise this school: Business and Public Administration, Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences. Programs are offered in both a traditional residential campus setting in Juneau and via distance education from Juneau, Ketchikan, and Sitka. The ideal candidate will work collaboratively toward student success for a diverse student population. Our mission: Student learning enhanced by faculty scholarship, undergraduate research and creative activities, community engagement, and the cultures and environment of Southeast Alaska.

Duties Manage the fiscal affairs of the School of Arts and Sciences including developing the annual budget.   Supervise e.g., recruit, select, train, schedule, and evaluate staff and faculty. Ensure faculty and staff adhere to performance standards. Ensure that UA and UAS policies and procedures, including risk management and collective bargaining agreements, are followed. Provide guidance to faculty in preparing for promotion and tenure with meaningful annual evaluations. Recommend to the Provost faculty selection, retention, promotion, and the granting of tenure via the UAS faculty evaluation process.   Support and advance the University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) and University of Alaska (UA) through collaboration across academic units within and outside of the UA. Foster academic partnerships, including with K-12 institutions, to expand educational opportunities. Seek broad-based support from external constituencies, including fundraising and development for the School in conjunction with other UAS offices. Facilitate and promote marketing and recruitment of students and personnel in cooperation with other UAS offices.   Create and maintain an engaging learning environment that fosters faculty excellence and student success. Provide leadership in the development, enhancement, promotion and support for academic programs. Work collaboratively within the School and across campus towards continual improvement of student enrollment, retention and completion. Manage School of Arts & Sciences assessment of student learning outcomes. Support professional development of faculty and staff. Coordinate course scheduling, enrollment analysis and management to maximize student access. Promote and build student retention and achievement initiatives and instructional program innovations. Support faculty and student research, scholarship, and creative activities.   Additional Position Information   Working in a shared governance environment, the Dean will provide leadership in the development, enhancement, promotion of, and support for academic programs. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with faculty, deans, directors, staff, university leadership, and students towards continual improvement of student learning and student success. This position is located in Juneau, the beautiful capital city of Alaska.   The UAS School of Arts & Sciences includes four departments that offer a wide variety of programs that include all of the UAS General Education Requirements (GERs), several associate’s degrees, interdisciplinary bachelor’s degrees, and a single graduate program in public administration. Learning and research take place not only in classrooms or online, but also in the rainforest, ice field, wetlands, and marine and built environments of Southeast Alaska. Small classes with top-notch faculty allow students to build relationships while pursuing their learning goals. Internship and practicum opportunities with the Alaska State Legislature, Sealaska Heritage Institute, and other organizations allow students to gain experience, knowledge, and skill. The School of Arts and Sciences supports undergraduate research and creative activities and holds regular talks and symposia to allow students to showcase their work. Required Education & Experience

PhD or terminal degree appropriate to the candidate's discipline completed prior to position start date.
Minimum of three years experience in progressively responsible leadership positions within higher education.
Fiscal and budget responsibility experience.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Demonstrated ability to provide leadership to faculty and academic programs.
Excellent planning, communication, and organizational skills.
Knowledge of and experience with best practices in teaching and learning.
Demonstrated success in working collaboratively, effectively, and enthusiastically within a complex and dynamic environment.
Demonstrated experience with providing or supporting a student-centric academic experience.
Demonstrated experience in developing and managing a budget.
Experience with student success initiatives.
Demonstrated leadership in assessment of student learning outcomes.
Skills in securing and managing external funding sources that include research grants, program sponsored funds, and/or private donations.
Knowledge or ability to equitably interpret and apply rules, regulations, processes, and policies related to higher education administration including grant and sponsored program administration.
Experience with undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative activities.
Ability to collaborate with deans, department chairs, and researchers to establish financially stable, exceptional research programs.
Ability to develop partnerships with community and tribal organizations.
Knowledge of Alaska Native or other Indigenous cultures, languages, and/or arts.

Typical Experience

Minimum of three years experience teaching in a post-secondary setting is preferred.
Preferred experience should include academic managerial experience at the department level or above.
Experience working successfully with people of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds and underserved populations.
Experience with assessment and/or accreditation at the college and university level.
Experience with interdisciplinary, culturally-informed, and place-based curriculum.
Experience working in or clear understanding of the mission of an open enrollment institution.
Experience in securing external support and fundraising is preferred.
Record of having worked collaboratively in shared governance organizations and with faculty, staff and students.
Experience with interdisciplinary, culturally-informed, and placed-based curriculum.
Experience working with traditionally underserved populations is preferred.
Experience with Alaska Native or other Indigenous cultures, languages, and/or arts.
