About the Opportunity:
Northeastern is a global university and NU-RES supports its team working remotely. Remote locations and work schedules are determined based on operational needs and in consultation with Team members, consistent with University policies and guidance. This position may be expected to return to an in-person work schedule.

Responsibilities:
This position will support the functions of the Research Finance office under the NU-Research Enterprise Services for sponsored activities by making sure that the university is in compliance with applicable federal regulations, sponsor requirements and university policies with a focus on fiscal compliance. The Research Finance Analyst (RFA) is the key sponsored program financial contact for the departmental administrators, principal investigators and NU central research administration related to monitoring, controlling and reporting of grants and contracts. The position will manage a portfolio of approximately $50-60M dollars of complex research accounts and perform, on a daily basis, analysis of accounts and communication with the research community, sponsors and central administration personnel.

The position is expected to foster consultative relationships as well as support a professional internal environment, providing award support and training especially in the area of compliance. The RFA will ensure compliance with Federal, State, and University policies through applying specialized knowledge and interpreting rules, regulations, procedures and policies from funding agencies. The individual is expected to exercise independent judgement and discretion and take initiative in the management of grants and contracts through working collaboratively with PIs, Research Administration staff and other university personnel. Specific responsibilities will include but not be limited to conducting compliance training for new awards, award set up in Banner, monitor budgets, manage the fiscal responsibility of their assigned grant portfolio, create ad hoc reports, resolve issues and interpret policies, interpret financial information in award documents, review and approve expenditure request documents ensuring expenditures are appropriately charged to correct accounts dependent upon grant restrictions, financial reporting and close out the grant or contract in a timely manner. Other key skills include: Interpersonal, organizational, time management, problem solving, decision making, collaboration and customer service.

A Culture of Service:
The RFA works with the Associate Directors and Director with regard to fiscal compliance of sponsored award expenditures, AR monitoring and financial reporting at Northeastern. A key success factor for this role is being current with respect to federal regulations as well as the ability to train others on the application of these regulations. The ability to create and maintain a culture of service, accountability and timeliness is essential.

Compliance and Stewardship:
This role must treat effective compliance as an equal priority, stay abreast of sponsor rules, regulations and policy changes, as well as institutional best practices in research administration and finance. Participate in sponsored research initiatives and projects as assigned, as well as leading the adoption of best practices to promote continuous improvement making sure that the highest quality standards are met.

Qualifications:
  • BS/BA or is required
  • Extensive experience working with the Federal agencies/departments in particular NSF, HHS, ONR, NASA, DOE, DHS and the Commonwealth of MA is required
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving skills with a high attention to detail
  • Excellent excel skills and other analytical tool skills
  • Proven customer service skills
  • 2-5 years work experience required
  • Must be able to work effectively in a team oriented environment
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to interact with both senior and management and subordinates
