The University at Buffalo (UB) invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for the position of dean of the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (SPPS). A member of the Association of American Universities (AAU) and the largest and most comprehensive public research university in the State University of New York (SUNY) system, UB is an internationally renowned center for academic excellence. The premier pharmacy school in New York State and a national leader in education and research, SPPS is the No. 1 ranked school of pharmacy in New York State and No. 14 in the United States by U.S. News & World Report.

Encompassing the Departments of Pharmacy Practice and Pharmaceutical Sciences, SPPS offers professional, undergraduate, and graduate programs that educate and train future pharmacists and pharmaceutical research scientists as well as a rich and multifaceted research portfolio. Current enrollment is 811 students, including 290 undergraduates (including pre-PharmD students) and 521 graduate and professional students.

The School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is housed in the state-of-the-art, 160,000 square-foot Pharmacy Building, opened in September of 2012 on UB’s historic South Campus. SPPS is part of the university’s Academic Health Center, which also includes the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, School of Dental Medicine, School of Nursing, and School of Public Health and Health Professions. The university boasts a robust network of clinical and research affiliations with a variety of local, regional, national and international sites, including Roswell Park Cancer Institute, the Nobel Prize-winning Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute, Great Lakes Health System, the National Institutes of Health, the AIDS Clinical Trial Group, and the University of Zimbabwe, Harare.

SPPS is guided by a strategic plan, created in 2014 and currently under revision, which is aligned with UB’s institutional priorities and has guided priorities for the school in education, clinical practice, research and scholarship, and service and outreach. In addition, SPPS is committed to attracting and retaining a diverse, multicultural community of students, faculty, staff, mentors and preceptors and to building an equitable, inclusive and respectful environment within the school. In 2020, SPPS launched several diversity and inclusion initiatives to achieve this goal.

SPPS employs 50 faculty members, including 44 full-time faculty (23 tenured/tenure track) and 6 part-time faculty, and 74 full-time staff. SPPS faculty rank among the very best in their fields, recognized nationally and internationally as ground-breaking researchers, world-class scholars and outstanding teachers who are eager to share their scientific and clinical expertise with their students. In 2018-19, SPPS faculty generated $11.4 million in total research expenditures. The AACP ranks SPPS in the top 30 universities for research funding, including total extramural funding and highly competitive National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant support.

SPPS graduates are highly regarded and sought after for positions in academe and research and by industry-leading employers. The American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education ranked SPPS second in the nation for producing deans or chairs at other U.S. pharmacy schools.

The SPPS dean will be a member of the university’s senior leadership team, working with the president, provost, vice president for health sciences, deans and other senior leaders to advance the university’s mission of excellence in teaching, research, and engagement. As the academic and administrative head of the school, the dean reports to both the provost and executive vice president for academic affairs and the vice president for health sciences in the areas of interprofessional education, health sciences collaborative research, and clinical programs. The dean is responsible for providing overall leadership to the school to promote academic excellence, foster an inclusive environment, and advance its national and international prominence in research, education, and engagement.

For the next SPPS dean, UB is seeking an accomplished professional, educator and researcher with a strong commitment to pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences education and to diversity, equity and inclusion among the school’s constituents. The ideal candidate will be an individual of integrity, an intellectual driver, an advocate for the school and the university, a facilitator of interdisciplinary work within the school and across the university, an energetic and engaged partner in building and enhancing relationships with the school’s many constituents and the larger community, and a skilled administrator.

The dean should have substantial experience in a distinguished academic or comparable setting and the capacity to formulate and articulate a shared vision, persuade a wide range of audiences of its value, and engage others in its implementation. The dean will have distinguished academic credentials in a pharmacy or pharmaceutical sciences field including a record of significant scholarly and/or clinical accomplishment, excellence in teaching and mentorship, and service record appropriate to appointment at the rank of full professor at a research university.

Individuals interested in the role of SPPS dean should provide an electronic version of their curriculum vitae (PDF strongly preferred).  A letter describing interest in, and qualifications for, the position is recommended, but not required. All inquiries, nominations and applications should be sent electronically (no later than March 8) via email to:
