The University at Buffalo (UB) invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for the position of dean of the School of Social Work (SSW). A member of the Association of American Universities (AAU) and the largest and most comprehensive public research university in the State University of New York (SUNY) system, UB is an internationally renowned center for academic excellence. Ranked among the top 10% of schools of social work in the United States by U.S. News & World Report, SSW is widely recognized for its distinctive trauma-informed and human rights perspectives, which are integrated into all aspects of its academic programs and which prepare graduates to be successful social workers in the 21st century.

SSW has been guided by a strategic plan, which is aligned with UB’s institutional priorities and focused on infusing a global focus in the school, enhancing the research culture and increasing faculty publishing, expanding online course offerings, and deepening the digital literacy of the school’s faculty, staff and students. In addition, SSW has a strong commitment to recruiting and nurturing students, faculty and staff who represent diverse cultures, backgrounds and experiences; to providing an equitable and inclusive learning and working community that values the diverse racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and sociocultural communities SSW serves; and to supporting social and racial justice.

SSW offers nine degree programs, which include the MSW with in-person and online options; PhD in Social Welfare; and a recently launched online Doctor of Social Work (DSW) program. In addition, SSW offers six collaborative degree programs – MSW/PhD, BA/MSW, JD/MSW, MBA/MSW and MPH/MSW – as well as an undergraduate minor in Community Organizing and Development and micro-credentials in Aging, Serious Illness Care, Child Advocacy Studies, and Veteran and Military Family Care. 683 students are enrolled in Fall 2020 (601 MSW, 30 DSW, 20 PhD and 32 Non-Degree students), and they are able to focus their studies on areas such as aging, child welfare, disaster response, mental health, substance abuse, and veterans and military families.

The School of Social Work employs 104 faculty members, including 34 full-time faculty (24 tenured/ tenure track) and 70 part-time faculty, and 32 dedicated, full-time staff members. SSW faculty have received high-profile research grants from some of the world’s most influential professional, social and scientific organizations, such as the National Institutes of Health; National Science Foundation; Health Resources and Services Administration; National Child Welfare Workforce Institute; Council on Social Work Education; American Institute of Pakistan Studies; Integrity Partners for Behavioral Health; Robert Wood Johnson Foundation; RRF Foundation for Aging; and Poverty, Race and Research Action Council.

SSW was granted full eight-year reaccreditation from the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) in 2019, and it is among only 22 social work schools nationwide that have been continuously accredited by CSWE for 85 years or longer.

The SSW dean will be a member of the university’s senior leadership team, working with the president, provost, deans, and other senior leaders to advance the university’s mission of excellence in teaching, research, and engagement. As the chief academic and administrative officer of the school, the dean reports to the provost and executive vice president for academic affairs and is responsible for providing overall leadership to the school to promote academic excellence and advance its national and international prominence in research, education, and engagement.

UB is seeking an accomplished researcher, educator and visionary leader with a strong commitment to social work education to lead the School of Social Work in the 21st century. The ideal candidate will be an individual of integrity, an intellectual leader among the faculty, an advocate for the school and the university, a creative problem solver, a facilitator of interdisciplinary work within the school and across the university, an energetic and engaged partner in building and enhancing relationships with the school’s many constituents and the larger community, and a skilled and conscientious administrator.

The dean should have substantial leadership experience in a distinguished academic or comparable setting and the capacity to formulate and articulate a shared vision, persuade a wide range of stakeholders of its value, and engage others in its implementation. The dean will have distinguished academic credentials in social work including a record of significant scholarly accomplishment and excellence in teaching and service appropriate to appointment at the rank of full professor at a research university.

Interested individuals should provide an electronic version of their curriculum vitae (PDF strongly preferred). A letter describing interest in, and qualifications for, the position is recommended, but not required. All inquiries, nominations and applications should be sent (no later than March 8) via email to:
