The Carleton College Archaeology Program invites applications for the Robert A. Oden, Jr. Postdoctoral Fellowship for Innovation in the Liberal Arts. This is a two-year position, which will begin September 1, 2021. The candidate must have a Ph.D. in hand (and received less than five years ago) by the start-date of the position. The appointment involves half-time research and writing, and half-time teaching for a total of five courses over a two-year period (six ten-week trimesters).

We seek candidates who have demonstrated a capacity for innovative research, engaged scholarship, and cross-disciplinary thinking. Applicants' general area of specialization should be archaeology, though geographic and thematic areas of expertise are open. We seek candidates that will complement, rather than reproduce, current strengths in Mediterranean archaeology and medieval Europe. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in the archaeology of the Americas. Teaching responsibilities may include the following courses (subject to discussion of program needs and the candidate's interests):

  • An introductory, survey-style course focused on the archaeology of the Americas (or some part therein)
  • A more advanced course on a thematic subject, according to the candidate's area of expertise
  • ARCN 246: Archaeological Methods (a hands-on field methods course offered in the spring trimester)
  • ARCN 395: Archaeology: Science, Ethics, Nationalism and Cultural Property (the archaeology program's capstone seminar)

Carleton is a highly selective liberal arts college with a student body of approximately 2,000. Located in the thriving two-college town of Northfield, Minnesota, it is forty-five miles from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, in easy reach of a vibrant metropolitan area that is home to three million people and rich cultural resources. We are particularly interested in candidates who are committed to teaching a diverse student body in a highly selective, liberal arts environment. Carleton College does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, ethnicity, religion, sex, national origin, marital status, veteran status, actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, status with regard to public assistance, disability, or age in providing employment or access to its educational facilities and activities. We are committed to developing our faculty to better reflect the diversity of our student body and American society. Women and members of underrepresented minority groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

To apply, please visit the Carleton College website careers.carleton.edu and submit an online application that includes (1) a cover letter that introduces the candidate, their teaching and research interests and strengths, and their particular research agenda over the next two years; (2) a c.v.; (3) short descriptions of two to three proposed courses (150-300 words each); (4) a concise (one-page) statement about teaching in an undergraduate liberal arts environment and how the candidate would contribute to a college community that embraces a diversity of people and perspectives as one of its core values; and (5) contact information for three referees (whom we will contact to solicit letters after an initial round of reviewing applications).

Please send inquiries to Alex Knodell, Director of Archaeology and Associate Professor of Classics (aknodell@carleton.edu). Review of applications will begin on March 1 and continue until the position is filled.
