Pay Range:

$79,000 - $131,000

The Opportunity:

The Department of Petroleum Engineering at Colorado School of Mines invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track, academic faculty appointment as a Professor of Practice. The required subject matter expertise is on drilling and well completion, with an emphasis on drilling. The position is expected to support the department’s drilling- and completion-oriented courses, participate in summer field camps, and oversee the drilling laboratory capabilities including the Apache Drilling Lab at the Edgar Mine and the lost circulation/cementing labs and the drilling simulator systems in Marquez Hall. The position is expected to significantly contribute to online teaching efforts. Engagement in scholarly activities such as research projects and publications is desired. Expertise in drilling and completion is needed to assist other opportunities at Mines, such as underground tunneling, geothermal, space exploration, subsurface hydrology, and CCUS.

Responsibilities:

• Teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels; prepare academic curriculum and instructional plans
• Contribute to curriculum development for both in-person and online courses
• Oversee the drilling simulation and fluid lab in Marquez Hall, the lost circulation and cementing labs in Marquez Hall, and the Apache core drilling lab at the Edgar Mine
• Mentor and supervise students
• Engage in scholarly activities such as publications and research
• Participate in service to the department, Mines, and the discipline of petroleum engineering

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

• Master of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering or related discipline and +10 years of professional experience or Bachelors of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering or related discipline and +15 years of professional experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• General pedagogical knowledge (how to teach); pedagogical content knowledge (how to teach a specific discipline) in drilling and completion; ability to use instructional technology for effective teaching.
• Knowledge of and practical experience in drilling and completion.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

• Degree(s) in Petroleum Engineering or related discipline and +15 years of professional experience.

Certifications and Licenses:

• Professional Engineer License or equivalent
• Well Blowout certification

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of drilling / completion applications and needs in non-hydrocarbon systems
• Record of technical publication
• Experience in working with students and/or mentoring young professionals

Department Description:

The Petroleum Engineering Department has a preeminent program in education and research and offers undergraduate and graduate (Master and PhD) degrees. The strength of the education and research programs is enhanced through collaboration with the strong geosciences departments as well as many other disciplines at Mines. The Department has fourteen faculty, five supporting staff, and 258 undergraduate and 66 graduate students. The annual research volume of the Department is approximately $2 million from private sector, foundations, and government, with several large research programs on unconventional reservoirs, reservoir modeling and engineering, geomechanics, rock and fluid characteristics, stimulation and fracturing, geothermal energy, and drilling / completion / production.
