Job Description

The Invasive Species Working Group (ISWG) at Virginia Tech , a subsidiary of the Global Change Center , seeks a qualified, highly motivated individual for a unique research position working at the interface of the biological and social sciences. The ISWG engages in a broad range of invasion-related projects, including with various officials, academics, and other stakeholders across Virginia and beyond.

The postdoc will assist and lead several ongoing and forthcoming projects including, but not limited to: expansion and coordination of stakeholder network, data analysis and database development, proposal preparation, and engagement with ongoing ISWG activities. The postdoctoral associate will work closely with faculty from across campus with wide-ranging experience and interests, spanning the social and biophysical sciences. This position will have the opportunity to engage in a number of ISWG activities, and will be expected to lead several of the products that emerge from those efforts, including multiple publications, proposals, and the chance to interact and network with a range of scientists and stakeholders involved in questions of invasive species biology, policy, and management.

The position will be advised by Drs. Todd Schenk, tschenk@vt.edu (School of Public and International Affairs) and Jacob Barney, jnbarney@vt.edu (School of Plant & Environmental Sciences).

Required Qualifications

-PhD in a related discipline. PhD awarded no more than four years prior to the effective date of appointment with a minimum of one year eligibility remaining.
-Demonstrated ability to analyze data and publish peer-reviewed publications in the fields of invasive species, biology, policy, or management
-Strong oral and written communication skills
-Ability to independently assume tasks identified through collective efforts and complete this through a strong work ethic and self motivation
-Strong interest in building and working in collaborative teams to achieve broad goals

Preferred Qualifications

-Background in invasive species related research
-Demonstrated experience working in collaborative teams at the science-policy interface
