The Department of Psychiatry is seeking aNurse Practitioner to execute medical duties as outlined below under the direct supervision of a physician monitor, on behalf of the research and treatment program at the Behavioral Pharmacology Research Unit (BPRU).

The Nurse Practitioner will work with a team of physicians, nurses (RNs, LPNs), and other staff to execute research in accordance with study protocols. The Nurse Practitioner will practice within the guidelines of the unit, department, and the institution in accordance with the bylaws of the Maryland Board of Nursing.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform and clearly document comprehensive medical histories and physical examinations of participants and volunteers, including healthy controls as well as those with psychiatric and drug use disorders.
  • Evaluate medical eligibility of individuals based on study specific inclusion/exclusion criteria.
  • Meet with participants to discuss the risks, benefits and alternatives to participation. Complete the protocol medical staff/physician consent.
  • Conduct assessments of participants in protocols, assessing for side effects, adverse events (including identification, duration, and severity), and any other concerns noted by staff or volunteers.
  • Conduct exit history and physical examinations as required for studies.
  • Clearly and effectively document assessments.
  • Liaison with physicians and other staff regarding acute issues with study participants.
  • Establish medical diagnoses and treatment plans for common acute and chronic health conditions of study participants. Assess and manage health problems as needed. Encourage patients to establish medical care. Make medical referral as appropriate with proper documentation. For acute and or more severe medical problems requiring immediate attention, refer (sometimes accompany) to JHBMC Emergency Department for evaluation and treatment.
  • Participate in treatment team/multidisciplinary meetings.
  • Review research planning forms for completeness and feasibility.
  • Review and in collaboration with physician staff and other personnel, create medical orders for protocols.
  • Review and interpret laboratory test results, inform participants of results, and make referrals as indicated.
  • Prescribe/dispense medications as appropriate and/or per protocol.
  • Perform procedures including phlebotomy, peripheral intravenous catheter placement, intravenous administration per protocol, and electrocardiography.
  • Provide coverage when needed.
  • Assist with maintenance of relevant BPRU policies and procedures.
  • Assist with and coordinate relevant maintenance logs and quality assurance checks for equipment used by medical staff.
  • Assist with supervision of BPRU RNs and LPNs, including input in to conduct of annual performance reviews.

Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's degree in nursing; Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner. Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Additional experience may substitute for master's degree.Current CPR certification required. Maintain ACLS certification. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JH Bayview Medical Center credentialing process is required prior to start date.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.

Preferred Qualifications:Three (3) years related direct patient care experience.

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of psychiatry and drug abuse issues.
  • Ability to work with a diverse socio-economic and racial population.
  • Understanding of phlebotomy, plasma extraction and sample storage.
  • Able to fulfill paperwork obligations of the position.
  • Basic clinical and hospital skills adequate to provide primary health care and to respond to medical emergencies.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to interact with faculty and staff on research teams to advise on research protocols.
  • Attention to detail and good proofreading skills.
  • Excellent oral communication skills to deal effectively inside and outside the unit.
  • Computer proficient.
  • Enthusiasm and willingness to learn about the work of the department as well to acquire new technical and research skills.
  • Organizational skills sufficient to work effectively in an environment that requires balancing multiple assignments.
  • Ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse cultures and backgrounds.

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
