Position Summary:

The University of Wisconsin-Madison is accepting applications for the director position at the American Family Insurance Data Science Institute (DSI). The DSI was established as a new center within the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education (OVCRGE) as of July 1, 2019. Data science is the study, development, and application of methods that reveal new insights from data. Data can include numbers, text, images, graphs, sounds, code, and metadata.

Three primary functions will drive the work of DSI: Research, Translation, and Collaboration.
-Cutting-edge research projects with substantial funding will involve multiple Principal Investigators (PIs) working together toward common research goals in fundamental data science.
-Translation involves partnerships between data scientists and domain research scientists to translate ideas into practice crucial to project success, by transforming frontier research methods into adaptable resources.
-Collaboration will connect researchers from all disciplines with available data science resources, experts, and efforts through facilitation guidance, training, and events.

The enterprise-wide scale of the DSI will greatly enhance the university's ability to compete for large multidisciplinary grants as well as for individual faculty to be more competitive in their applications for federal and foundation funding.

This position reports to the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Ph.D. or other advanced degree in a relevant discipline is required. Candidate must be eligible for tenure at the University of Wisconsin-Madison at the full professor level. The American Family Insurance Data Science Institute Director will have a concurrent faculty appointment in an appropriate academic department.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

A minimum of five years of demonstrated scientific leadership and managing a research-based team.

The mission of the American Family Insurance Data Science Institute (DSI) is to perform cutting-edge research in the fundamentals of data science and to catalyze the translation of this research into practice to advance scientific discovery in collaboration with researchers across campus and beyond. The institute and the School of Computer, Data and Information Sciences (CDIS) will engage synergistically in ways that amplify impact through data science thought leadership, innovation, talent development and knowledge/technology transfer.
