Colby Achievement Program in the Sciences (CAPS) is a summer program for science-focused students from diverse backgrounds to develop academic and leadership skills. The program is designed to provide participating pre-first year students with the tools and experience to excel in their chosen science major, and to encourage career development at an early stage of their Colby education. Program dates are generally mid-June through mid-August; the program coordinator will work full-time during the program dates, and 20 hours per week for the remainder of the 10-month position. The typical 10-month position would be March through December. Given the uncertainty of having an on-campus program in 2021, we anticipate this position working 20 hours per week until the start of the 2022 program. The position has the potential for annual renewal. We encourage inquiries from candidates who will contribute to the diversity of our College, including its cultural and ethnic diversity.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Work with the faculty program directors to plan, organize, and execute all aspects of CAPS
  • Manage all travel arrangements to and from Colby for program participants
  • Schedule, plan, and participate in program activities and social events, including some evenings and weekends; reserve rooms on campus for CPAS program events as needed
  • Act as point person for questions and inquiries about CAPS, including email, phone, text, and face-to-face
  • Serve as a liaison for CAPS students to other campus offices
  • Arrange and coordinate campus and off-campus room, board, and stipends related to CAPS
  • Work with participating staff and faculty to coordinate scheduling and program needs
  • Work with Office of Special Programs and dormitory CAs to arrange and oversee living arrangements and dormitory activities, including the planning and execution of evening social gatherings and events
  • Assist faculty program directors with data-gathering, photography, written reports, and other means of reporting and assessment
  • Maintain and manage CAPS website, Facebook pages, and other digital media related to CAPS
  • Create, update, and distribute CAPS schedule and calendar to participants and faculty
  • Rent vans, and organize and supervise student drivers for transportation purposes
  • Communicate program details with CAPS students and parents
  • Supervise student assistants to CAPS
  • Monitor CAPS budget in coordination with the faculty program directorsPerform additional duties as assigned; duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice


QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in education and experience
  • Highly organized with excellent interpersonal skills, particularly in working with teens
  • Valid driver’s license required and must meet the College’s Fleet Safety Policy requirements
  • Able to adapt to schedule changes
  • Must be able to commit significant time on nights and weekends during the program dates
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team, establish priorities, and work collaboratively as a member of a diverse community
  • Collaborative, constructive, and positive approach to work
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including strong relationship skills
  • Proficient with technology including the creation and modification of web content and use of social media


KEY RELATIONSHIPS :

This position has significant interaction with students, faculty, staff, and outside constituencies.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

General open office and campus environment. Position involves sitting, although frequent movement is necessary. Occasional lifting is required. Computer usage involving repetitive hand/wrist motion is also necessary. Evening and weekend work is expected during program dates.
