The Department of Physics at the University of Florida (UF) seeks a full-time, non-tenure track Assistant Scientist in Experimental Astrophysics, beginning March 2021. The position is time-limited and it is supported by project grants and is initially for a one-year period, expected to be renewed on a year-to-year basis, for a several year period, contingent on funding and performance. The salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, and includes a full benefits package.

The selected candidate is expected to take a leading role in the design, development and assembly of the ground support equipment for verifying the dimensional stability of the LISA telescopes. This specifically includes the design and verification of the telescope test structure as well as the optical design of the interferometric sensing system. This campaign is an integral part of NASAs technology development program to reach technical readiness level (TRL) 6 in 2024. The Assistant Scientist will join a group of three faculty members, a mechanical engineer, a postdoc and several graduate students, all working on the LISA telescope at the University of Florida. Our group works in close collaboration with the LISA project office at Goddard Space Flight Center which also funds the telescope work.

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) is a NASA-supported ESA-led space-based gravitational wave observatory aimed at detecting mergers between massive black holes and other gravitational wave sources which emit in the 100uHz to 100mHz frequency range. The European part of the scientific payload is the responsibility of the LISA consortium while NASA will provide the telescope, the laser system and the charge management system. As the payload is highly integrated, collaborating with the LISA consortium will be essential for the space mission and supporting this collaboration is expected from the selected candidate.

* H old a Ph.D. degree (or equivalent) in experimental astrophysics o r physics at the time of appointment

* Has extensive relevant research experience in ultra-high resolution laser interferometry in the LISA band,

* Has a profound understanding and experience in optimizing the optical design of telescope test structures used for interferometric telescope tests,

* Is proficient in OptoCad, Zemax, and Finessse; three optical simulation tools used by our group to optimize the TTS,

* Understands the LISA interferometric measurement system and its challenges.
