Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, located 25 minutes northeast of downtown St. Louis, MO, seeks dynamic applicants for a Visiting Assistant Professor position for Painting in the Department of Art and Design. This is a nine-month, non-tenure-track, full-time position, beginning August 2021, with a 3/3 teaching load. Primary responsibilities include supervision/instruction within the graduate and undergraduate Painting programs, mentorship of BFA/MFA students, and managing/maintaining the studio facilities in the recently expanded art and design building. In addition, applicants will be required to pursue an active research and exhibition practice.  

Terms of Appointment
Full time, non-tenure track, academic year (nine-month), beginning fall 2021.

Qualifications Required
Candidates must hold a MFA in Painting or related media. A minimum of one-year teaching experience in painting at the university level, beyond graduate school assistantship, or the equivalent in accumulated adjunct teaching. The successful candidate should have a strong understanding of practice and theory in both historical and contemporary painting.  Applicants should demonstrate competencies in teaching traditional techniques based in painting directly from observation with a strong foundation in illusionistic form-building and color theory. Candidates should be able to develop a curriculum that nurtures individual and authentic creative directions in students after establishing a skill-based foundation. While experience in teaching and/or painting the human figure is preferred, other demonstrated aptitudes in observational painting could be equally valuable.
