Job Description
The College of Science (COS) seeks an experienced, motivated, and resourceful individual to direct Orion, a living learning community (LLC) for students enrolled in science at Virginia Tech. Orion is designed to foster a sense of community in which students have a shared learning experience and a sense of belonging, and is committed to inclusiveness, diversity, and retention in STEM-related fields. The Orion Science LLC consists of undergraduate students majoring in biological, life, physical and/or quantitative sciences (see website at https://llc.vt.edu/orion.html). Orion integrates curricular and research opportunities through the lens of active learning. The curricular program consists of a First Year Experience (FYE) course coupled with opportunities to learn about, identify, and engage with real-world scientific issues. The program promotes both academic and professional development within a residential community space via the classroom, peer mentoring, and co-curricular activities.
The program director of Orion may be a Professor of Practice, Collegiate Faculty member, or an Instructor who will have their academic home in COS. The program director is a calendar-year position with a 30% administrative and 70% academic program appointment. This position includes leading the day-to-day administration of the Orion LLC, and overseeing the development, teaching and assessment of its integrated curricular, co-curricular, and research programs.
Required Qualifications
Graduate degree; University-level teaching experience; Ability to work both independently and in a team environment; Experience in organizational administration and supervision of project teams; Excellent time management and organization skills; Ability to work across disciplines and contribute to multidisciplinary projects; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty and administration both within the COS and across the divisions of Academic and Student affairs.
Preferred Qualifications
Training in higher education pedagogy and experience teaching with high impact educational practices.
