Health and Human Development Intern

For the 2021/2022 school year, Health and Human Development department of Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire seeks an intern with a demonstrated facility in health education or related field who is committed to secondary education and interested in being part of a collaborative group of teachers working with highly motivated high school students in a diverse, mostly residential community.

This position provides aspiring teachers the opportunity to work closely with a mentor and learn from experienced members of the department of Health and Human Development and other faculty and staff on campus. Enthusiasm for working with adolescents both in and out of the classroom is essential. A large portion of the position will involve community health education programming outside of the classroom while working as dormitory faculty, participating in our athletic program, and assisting with extracurricular activities as they are integral parts of the job.

Accountabilities

• Teaching: Interns will observe classes in the fall in preparation for teaching their own sections in the winter and spring. They are expected to be dedicated to careful daily preparation in order to meet the needs of motivated students working through a unique health and human development curriculum. The pedagogy at Phillips Exeter Academy prioritizes student-centered collaborative discussions around a Harkness table.
• Collaboration and Communication: Interns will meet at least once weekly with the Health and Human Development Department and/or the Chair to keep abreast of department guidelines and practices for content and to discuss their students’ experience and progress.
• Cultural Competency: Faculty at Phillips Exeter Academy are expected to demonstrate respect for diversity of identities and experiences, an orientation toward equity and inclusion, and cultural competency in all aspects of Academy life.
• Residential Life: Interns typically live in campus housing and play a critical role in cultivating Exeter’s community-centered student dormitory life. Intern will be responsible for one weekend of dormitory duty per month and one to three weekdays of dormitory duty per week, depending on the dormitory size they are assigned.
• Extracurricular Activities: Interns are typically expected to help supervise/support the school’s extracurricular activities in one or two specific areas (e.g. athletics, clubs, community service, arts).

Additional Requirements

1. A Bachelor’s degree or significant coursework in Health Education or related field.
2. Diversity or cultural competency education (conferences, seminars, in-service programs, coursework, independent study. LBGTQ, social justice and trauma informed teaching or experience or knowledge a plus.
3. Proof of authority to work in the United States
4. Successful completion of a criminal background check
5. Clean driving record.
6. Successfully complete a pre-employment physical/health screening examination that may include a drug screening
