The Chemical Safety Specialist position supports Environmental Health and Safety Services ( EHSS ) in managing chemical inventory tracking and centralized chemical receiving for the University. The Chemical Safety Specialist will administer the University’s new chemical tracking software system and oversee the collection and maintenance of the University’s chemical inventory.
The position will manage the new centralized chemical receiving area where chemicals will be received, tracked, and distributed out to campus use locations. The position will also provide chemical safety support to chemical users, monitor and generate associated compliance reports, and assist with hazardous materials shipping. The Chemical Safety Specialist position reports directly to the Research Safety Manager and will supervise chemical receiving support staff and interns.

Qualifications

Master’s (preferred) or Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or another science major with a strong knowledge of chemicals. Minimum 2 years’ experience with chemical handling and safety. including familiarity with chemical safety data sheets.

Knowledge of chemical safety data sheets, chemical compatibility and shipping requirements preferred. Strong data management skills and ability to effectively use Microsoft Office application suite and data management software applications.

Must be able to communicate effectively with a diverse campus population.

Successful candidate is expected to establish their principal residence in the Central New York area within approximately 30 minutes driving distance from Syracuse University.

Job Specific Qualifications

Strong knowledge of chemicals and related safety and compliance requirement. Excellent written, verbal and analytical skills and strong attention to detail. Demonstrates outstanding interpersonal skills.

Ability to work autonomously in a highly matrixed, decentralized and complex work environment. Willingness to work collaboratively in support of all areas of the EHSS Department.

Excellent organization and time management skills including demonstrated ability to coordinate schedules and meet time demands. Supervisory experience. Must be medically fit and able to wear respiratory protection.

Able to lift up to 50 lbs, and able to handle and maneuver chemical drums, boxes and container and transport them across campus using carts, dollies and/or University vehicles.

HAZWOPER 40 or 24 Hour certification preferred

Responsibilities

Chemical Receiving Area Manages the centralized chemical receiving area including receiving and distributing containers of chemicals to chemical use areas. Develops and communicates policies and procedures related to chemical receiving and distribution. Barcodes and inputs incoming chemicals into the chemical tracking software system. Transports chemical containers safely across campus, including driving a University vehicle, and delivers chemicals safety and securely to chemical use areas.

Coordinates regulatory related approvals when necessary for incoming chemical and provides guidance and support for the shipment of outgoing chemicals and other hazardous materials. Supervises chemical receiving support staff and interns, assigns
responsibilities, duties and goals, and coordinates schedules.

Chemical Inventory Management Manages, collects, and sustains a university wide chemical inventory and administers the University’s chemical tracking software system. Develops chemical inventory maintenance and chemical tracking software use procedures and processes and communicates and provides training to chemical users. Investigates and rectifies software problems, questions, and concerns. Periodically audits/rectifies chemical use area inventories with chemical tracking system information.

Oversees university wide access to online safety data sheets ( SDS ) including verifying SDSs for University chemicals are available in the system and requesting new SDSs be added by the software provider. Monitors chemical inventory compliance with applicable regulations and prepares related reports.

Chemical Safety Reviews chemical inventory and incoming chemicals for safety and compliance and communicates safety and compliance information to chemical users and EHSS leadership. Offers chemical safety assistance, guidance and support to chemical users and assists in the development of technical guidance and other informational materials to promote and enhance chemical laboratory safety and compliance. Develops and provides chemical safety, shipping and receiving training modules. Responds to chemical safety related inquiries, requests and concerns.

General Safety SupportWorks with other EHSS staff to support and foster overall safety in the laboratories including offering collaborative support EHSS’ biosafety, radiation safety and general laboratory safety programs as needed. Participates in chemical, biological or environmental incident investigations and spill response actions including the continued ability to use chemical protective suits, respirators, specialized equipment and air monitoring devices.
