Job Description

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is seeking a Communications Dispatcher for the Daytona Beach campus. The Communications Dispatcher is responsible for the general operation of the Campus Safety & Security Communications Center. The position maintains responsibility for the control and direction of incoming and outgoing telephone calls, coordination of emergency conditions, the dispatch of internal communications, the monitoring of alarms and coordination of emergency service, and visitor information and assistance. The Dispatcher makes staff emergency notifications and launches the campus emergency notification system as required.

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Monitor and dispatch Campus Safety & Security operations according to established dispatching procedures for emergency and service calls.
  • Complete entries into the Automated Records Management system for incidents, contacts and staff activities.
  • Provide directions, guidance and assistance for visitors, students, parents and other staff members or persons in need.
  • Monitor and respond to emergency, fire and security alarms and notification systems. Provide coordination with external emergency service agencies. Make staff notifications when necessary. Monitor other campus department radio frequencies.
  • Maintain familiarity and implement emergency dispatching procedures to include campus emergency notifications according to department operation procedures.
  • Maintain and update directory listings, after hours on-call personnel, access lists, and emergency procedures.


Schedule
The Campus Safety & Security department is a 24/7 operation which must be staffed at minimum levels at all times. As such, unscheduled occasional overtime and/or shift changes are required as needed or when special university details occur. The work schedule includes weekends and holidays. The Communications Dispatcher may be required to work one or more of the following shifts:

A shift 6:30 A.M. - 2:30 P.M.
B shift 2:30 P.M. - 10:30 P.M.
C shift 10:30 P.M. - 6:30 A.M

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • At least 1-3 years of work related experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Ability to write legibly, speak clearly, and manage multiple and sometimes stressful tasks (involving radio, phone, and personal communications) at the same time.
  • Must be able to compose brief communications for the campus emergency notification system.
  • Computer knowledge is mandatory to include proficiency with Microsoft operating systems and ability to learn various ERAU software systems.
  • A pre-employment drug screening is required and candidate is subject to random drug screening during employment period.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience and/or certification in emergency management, emergency operations center, or prior 911 dispatching / telecommunicators is highly desirable.
