Position Summary

Stevens Institute of Technology (Stevens) invites nominations and applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME). The Chair will report to the Dean of the Charles V. Schaefer, Jr., School of Engineering & Science (SES), the largest school at Stevens. The Chair will work closely with all levels of leadership as Stevens continues to increase its impact and to fulfill its vision of being a world-class, student-centric research university. Stevens offers an intellectually vibrant, diverse, highly interdisciplinary, collaborative and innovative community and is a great place to work.

Department of Biomedical Engineering

Founded in 2003 initially as an academic program, Biomedical Engineering has grown to be one of the nine vibrant departments in SES. BME is a key player in one of the six foundational pillars in Stevens’ 10-year Strategic Plan and is poised for significant expansion to create an increasingly dynamic environment for cutting-edge translational research through institutional investment. The newly constructed Gateway Academic Center, that will house a state-of-the-art tissue engineering research laboratory, is a recent example. BME offers a broad range of programs at all levels - an ABET-accredited undergraduate program, two Master’s programs, and a doctoral program - with a total of approximately 300 students. A distinction of Stevens BME education is problem-based, hands-on learning, and fostering development of an entrepreneurial mindset that has led to significant student achievements and awards. Departmental research is well-funded by NSF (including CAREER), NIH, DoD, and other federal, state, and private sources. Research focus areas include rehabilitation engineering, neural engineering, pulmonary biomechanics, biomedical imaging, and tissue engineering with opportunities to partner across departments in a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative campus environment. Our location affords additional opportunities to collaborate with the world’s brightest minds in medicine.

Qualifications

Applicants must hold an earned doctorate in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related discipline, have a strong record of scholarly activities, knowledge of academic administration, research, and undergraduate and graduate teaching.   The successful candidate is energized by working with colleagues to develop a shared and compelling strategic vision to elevate the department to the next level of success. Vital to this process is building a strong network of internal and external collaborators, and mentoring junior and mid-career faculty towards professional advancement. A commitment to creating a departmental climate where students, faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds can thrive is essential. A strong track record of successful clinical collaborations that could assist in strengthening relationships with neighboring medical centers in the NYC area is highly desired.
