WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY IN ST. LOUIS, Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures and Program in Film and Media Studies – Assistant Professor. The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures and Program in Film and Media Studies at Washington University in St. Louis invite applications for a tenure-track joint appointment (75% EALC, 25% FMS) in Chinese-language media cultures within the context of globalized communication. The position will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, home based in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, and will begin in the fall semester of 2021.

Strong candidates will have a firm grounding in humanities-based media studies with expertise in two key areas: 1) research relating to media and Chinese identity (as experienced in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and in Chinese communities around the globe), with a desired emphasis on digital communications media (e.g. social media platforms) or film; and 2) digital humanities or cultural analytics approaches that dramatically enhance research horizons related to cultural identity and diversity through sophisticated data analysis and visualization, multimodal scholarly projects, or related practices.

The successful candidate will possess the interdisciplinary expertise needed to provide training in Chinese-language media cultures and systems, information literacy, and the global history, theory, and/or production of digital media.  Potential areas of emphasis include, for instance, civic media and communication, activist media, and authoritarian media policy.

A Ph.D. in the field of East Asian studies and/or film and media studies, or a closely related field, is required at the time of appointment. For full consideration, candidates must have the preparation to teach introductory or survey courses on the history, theory, and analysis of digital media, and/or digital media production/analytics. The candidate should have native or near native fluency in both Chinese and English and research-appropriate abilities in Chinese language.  Duties will include teaching assigned courses at the graduate and undergraduate level, normally two per semester. Of the four courses to be offered during the academic year, one will be assigned by the Program in Film and Media Studies. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active research and publishing program. Duties will further include student advising and appropriate departmental and university service activities.
