Research Technologist

General Summary/Purpose:

The Research Technologist will perform cutting-edge research into the physiology of fungal pathogens. The start date is negotiable and can range from January-March 2021. The lab is dedicated to the study of micronutrients and antioxidants in fungal biology and fungal pathogenesis. Equally important to our mission is the training of the next generation of microbiology researchers. Our goal is to lessen the public health burden of infectious disease through science.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

The primary duties and responsibilities of the employee will include:

  • Designing and performing laboratory experiments, both independently, and as part of a collaborative scientific team.
  • Documenting, compiling, and analyzing experimental data accurately.
  • Participating in regular lab and small group meetings.
  • Reporting findings in oral and written formats, including manuscripts.
  • Maintaining and organizing the lab, including keeping track of supplies and reagents, and ordering and stocking the lab.

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, chemistry or related field is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
  • Prior research experience in a laboratory setting is preferred, although not required.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • We are looking for candidates who work well with others, are enthusiastic to learn, and motivated to contribute to the scientific and mentorship goals of the lab.

Any Specific Physical Requirements for the Job:

  • Materials, machines and/or equipment used on the job include balances, pH meters, centrifuges, electrophoresis system, microscopes, UV and visible spectroscopy, and incubators for growing fungal and bacterial cultures.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
