General summary/purpose:

The Technology Development Associate (TDA) reports to the Director, Life Sciences Technology Development and provides direct support for projects that includes identifying, developing, and managing promising faculty research and technologies to realize their full commercialization potential. TDA is a hybrid position that facilitates the advancement of these projects through scientific and operational engagement with faculty, Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures (JHTV) team members, and external organizations. The TDA uses their scientific background to align research activities with development plans and coordinates cross-functional teams to meet milestones and deliverables established by JHTV and faculty.

Specific duties & responsibilities:

  • Facilitates the development of projects from inception to completion by defining scope, objectives, implementation, and plans for promising technologies with high commercial value and/or impact.
  • Manages all aspects of technology projects as needed to advance projects to the next inflection point while recognizing that each project requires varying level of focus, effort allocation, and support in compliance with internal processes and policy requirements by coordinating internal and external efforts, ensuring project deliverables are met, and serving as a technical resource.
  • Tracks projects to ensure they stay on time with appropriate allocation of resources, and within the scope of work including making adjustments and problem-solving with stakeholders as needed.
  • Augments project management with scientific background to facilitate workflow including literature search, developing research plans in conjunction with JHTV and faculty, and technical analysis.
  • Evaluates and identifies promising technologies in support of the Director, Life Sciences Technology Development.

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Two years or more of project management experience or in combination with business development in a life science environment and a general understanding of the commercialization process of university based-inventions.

Preferred qualifications:

  • PhD or master’s degree in life or physical sciences strongly preferred. Other advanced degrees or combinations with directly related industry experience will also be considered.

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • US Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident required due to Federal Export Controls
  • Must have the science background to understand complex technologies.
  • Must work as a team member with other JHTV staff
  • Must be very detail oriented and highly organized
  • Very resourceful in terms of Internet searching
  • Ability to multi-task under deadline pressure

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
