Position Announcement

The Department of History, Humanities, and Modern Languages at Dixie State University (DSU) in St. George, Utah, is seeking an enthusiastic and well-qualified individual for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of American Sign Language (ASL), training future interpreters towards an ASL interpreter certification and/or degree. Responsibilities

  • Teach all levels (1000-4000) of ASL interpreting and related courses, leading to certification and/or degree. Classroom instruction and university translation services equal to 24 credits per academic year.
  • Review and assist with developing ASL curriculum sufficient to prepare students for state and national certification testing.
  • Work with the department chair, the dean, and other faculty to advance the university’s and department mission, including:
    • Holding office hours;
    • Advising program students;
    • Mentoring part-time instructors;
    • Rotating course coordination;
    • Engaging in community, university, departmental, and discipline service activities.
  • Fulfill faculty responsibilities, including participating in department events and meetings, as well as serving on departmental, college, and university committees as assigned.
  • Assist students in developing interpreting skills and analyzing ASL development and production.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Department Chair and/or Dean.


Qualifications

  • Terminal degree (PhD or EdD) required, with an undergraduate or graduate degree in Deaf Studies, Deaf Education, ASL Interpreting, or related field preferred. Candidates who are ABD that will complete their terminal degree by August 2021 will also be considered.
  • Interpreter Certification (NIC, NAD, RID, CDI, UTAH PROFESSIONAL, or equitable qualification) required; some interpreting experience expected.
  • Membership in various interpreter, deaf, and interpreter training organizations.
  • Focus, interest, and expertise in college level teaching (finalists will be required to demonstrate competence in a teaching module).
  • Ability and willingness to adapt courses to current technology.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with students, staff, and colleagues – manually, orally and in writing.
  • An eagerness to engage with faculty, staff, administrators, and constituents or advisory boards to develop ways to improve the educational experience of students interested in pursuing careers related to American Sign Language.
  • Expertise in course, curriculum, and program development preferred.


Supplemental Information

POSITION DETAILS, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS: Full-time (9-month) tenure-track faculty position. Faculty service begins August 2021, with pay & benefits starting July 1, 2021. Annual salary of $54,000+, with additional compensation available for overload teaching.
