Job Summary
Hours are between 7:30am-5:30pm with some flexibility required.
The person in this position will aid in the care and treatments, diagnostics and procedures of patients in the Oncology service of the Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital and will assist other services, as needed.
This position will also provide support to the veterinary students in charge of primary patient care and the general cleaning, stocking and maintenance of equipment in the Oncology service area.
Essential Functions
Duties will include but are not limited to: operating, maintaining, repairing, cleaning laboratory equipment, clinic area, and maintaining supplies; performing, instructing, and demonstrating specialized veterinary care techniques and procedures; assisting veterinarians in the care of patients requiring specialized care; inspecting facilities, equipment, and supplies daily, as well as observing health status of animals, environmental conditions, temperature, and sanitation; providing specialized care and monitoring of animals before, during, and/or after procedures; administering medicine and treatment according to prescribed instruction; observing and recording vital data, abnormal signs, body weight, food/water intake of animals, and collecting and labeling specimens; performing emergency first aid such as emergency resuscitation or other life-saving procedures; scheduling appointments for diagnostic procedures and advising referring veterinarians about the use of specialized equipment; may be responsible for, or assist in, billing clients, inputting charges, and/or similar tasks.

Depending on the combination of education and experience, selected candidates may be hired as a Veterinary Assistant II/ III or Technician I/II/ III . Salary range is determined by eligibility for Level I, II or III .
Level II Veterinary Assistant:
- High school diploma or equivalent plus 2 years of experience in the care and comfort of animals.
Level III Veterinary Assistant:
- High school diploma or equivalent plus 4 years of experience in the care and comfort of animals
Level I Veterinary Technician:
1. Associate’s degree or higher in a technical or scientific field related to Veterinary Technology.
2. Active license with the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medicine as a Veterinary Technician, have met all requirements to become licensed, or have passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam ( VTNE ). Veterinary Technician certification or license must be obtained within 6 months of employment.
Level II Veterinary Technician:
1. Associate’s degree or higher in a technical or scientific field related to Veterinary Technology.
2. 2 years of experience in Veterinary Technology or the care and comfort of animals.
3. Active license with the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medicine as a Veterinary Technician, have met all requirements to become licensed, or have passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam ( VTNE ). Veterinary Technician certification or license must be obtained within 6 months of employment.
Level III Veterinary Technician:
1. Associate’s degree or higher in a technical or scientific field related to Veterinary Technology.
2. 4 years of experience in Veterinary Technology or the care and comfort of animals.
