Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

This position will lead and coordinate diversity, equity and inclusion efforts within the Division of Student Affairs to ensure that staff have an equitable work environment regardless of race, gender, age, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, identity, or disability with access to opportunities for success. The position will focus the division, as an organization, on the goal of becoming a more inclusive and diverse organization with the long-term goal of becoming an anti-racist organization through education, capacity building, and structural change.

This position serves as a member of the Senior Vice Provost’s senior leadership team and the division’s Student Affairs Leadership Team ( SALT ). The Assistant Vice Provost advises the Senior Vice Provost on compliance matters, best practices, policy development and implementation strategies. The Assistant Vice Provost serves on division and university committees.

Minimum Hiring Standards

-Graduate degree in related field
-Experience in organizational capacity building and change management
-Demonstrated ability to influence and be a change agent within an organizational setting
-Demonstrated history of involvement in diversity, inclusion and equity initiatives
-Experience in developing and implementing diversity and inclusion programs
-Evidence of building collaborative working relationships across a diverse group of individuals
-Proven organizational and process management skills
-Experience with conflict management and navigating organizational impasses
-Ability to utilize evidence-based information and practices to support organizational change
-Evidence of strong verbal and written communication skills
-Ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization
-Evidence of approaching work in creative and innovative ways
-Evidence of creative problem solving
-Experience creating metrics driving accountability
-History of decision making guided by an ethical framework
-Appreciation for the unique culture that accompanies higher education
-Demonstrated ability as a self-starter with initiative and follow through
-Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse staff and student environment, and the commitment to do so at VCU

Preferred Hiring Standards

-Professional membership and participation in organizations focused on diversity and inclusion
-Demonstrated training concentration in diversity and inclusion
-Knowledge of anti-racist organizational development
-Administrative and leadership experience at academic institution
-Evidence of creating a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Strategic Plan
