Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and a world leader in experiential learning. The same commitment to connecting with the world drives our use-inspired research enterprise. The university offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and graduate programs leading to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Our campuses in Charlotte, N.C., San Francisco, Seattle, and Toronto are regional platforms for undergraduate and graduate learning and collaborative research. Northeastern pursues advanced research in security and materials at the Innovation Campus in Burlington, Massachusetts, and in coastal sustainability at the Marine Science Center in Nahant, Massachusetts.

About the Opportunity:
The Center for Drug Discovery, Northeastern University, is dedicated to discovering novel medications, developing technologies that increase the success of discovering new therapeutic agents, and training scientists in the multidisciplinary field of drug discovery. To help fulfill this mission, we seek a full-time Associate Research Scientist experienced in drug discovery synthetic chemistry and its applications to biological systems. This hands-on position is key to the Center's activities for both translational science and for conducting pre-clinical research.

Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Center's Director, the candidate will independently design and synthesize novel compounds, develop novel and suitable synthetic routes for chemistry scaffolds leading to potent ligands, record, analyze, and interpret resulting data, organize the data into a form suitable for peer-reviewed publications, patent filing, new grant submissions and existing/funded grant reports, and plan future experimental approaches. As required, the candidate will also develop novel, economical, scalable and reproducible synthetic routes for the re-synthesis of key synthetic intermediates and lead compounds to facilitate further in vitro and in vivo testing. As a team player, he/she will be expected to actively participate in Center meetings and seminars, collaborate and work with the Center's interdisciplinary teams. The incumbent should be highly motivational, and should be able to integrate in a team with multidisciplinary background. The incumbent will also be responsible for: training and supervising students and post-doctoral scientists; helping to set project goals and objectives; develop research protocols and experiments for applied research at an advanced level jointly developed with the CDD Director, including recommendations for future research projects.

Specific Job Responsibilities include: Share research findings by writing scientific articles or by making presentations at scientific conferences. Prepare reports or recommendations, based upon research outcomes. Teach or advise undergraduate or graduate students or supervise their research. Manage laboratory teams or monitor the quality of a team's work. Isolate, analyze, or synthesize vitamins, hormones, allergens, minerals, or enzymes and determine their effects on body functions. Develop new methods to study the mechanisms of biological processes. Design or perform experiments with equipment such as lasers, accelerators, or mass spectrometers. Research the chemical effects of substances, such as drugs, serums, hormones, or food, on tissues or vital processes.

Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Chemistry and/or Chemical Biology with at least five years of work experience on performing medicinal chemistry, preferably experiments either independently or in collaboration with Supervisor/Director. The candidate must be able to undertake full-time research, together with scholarship, and work independently on projects and tasks that are assigned by Supervisor/Director.
